Mechanical properties of Macadamia nutshell powder and PLA bio-composites

2016

AbstractA study on the mechanical properties of Macadamia nutshell powder/PLA bio-composites is presented in this paper. The effects of powder weight content, powder condition and processing methods are investigated with the aid of Design of Experiments. It is shown from the results that both the stiffness and strength are dependent on the weight content of Macadamia nutshell powders. The elastic modulus increases 9.8% when the Macadamia nutshell powder content is 40%. Both flexural and tensile strengths decrease with increasing Macadamia nutshell powder content. On average, when the Macadamia nutshell powder content is 40%, the decreases in the flexural and tensile strengths are 42 and 63%…

Tensor tomography on Cartan–Hadamard manifolds

2017

We study the geodesic X-ray transform on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, and prove solenoidal injectivity of this transform acting on functions and tensor fields of any order. The functions are assumed to be exponentially decaying if the sectional curvature is bounded, and polynomially decaying if the sectional curvature decays at infinity. This work extends the results of Lehtonen (2016) to dimensions $n \geq 3$ and to the case of tensor fields of any order.

Translating Solitons Over Cartan-Hadamard Manifolds

2020

We prove existence results for entire graphical translators of the mean curvature flow (the so-called bowl solitons) on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. We show that the asymptotic behaviour of entire solitons depends heavily on the curvature of the manifold, and that there exist also bounded solutions if the curvature goes to minus infinity fast enough. Moreover, it is even possible to solve the asymptotic Dirichlet problem under certain conditions.

Algebras of frequently hypercyclic vectors

2019

We show that the multiples of the backward shift operator on the spaces $\ell_{p}$, $1\leq p<\infty$, or $c_{0}$, when endowed with coordinatewise multiplication, do not possess frequently hypercyclic algebras. More generally, we characterize the existence of algebras of $\mathcal{A}$-hypercyclic vectors for these operators. We also show that the differentiation operator on the space of entire functions, when endowed with the Hadamard product, does not possess frequently hypercyclic algebras. On the other hand, we show that for any frequently hypercyclic operator $T$ on any Banach space, $FHC(T)$ is algebrable for a suitable product, and in some cases it is even strongly algebrable.

Upregulation of the α-secretase ADAM10 - risk or reason for hope?

2010

A decade ago, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10) was identified as an alpha-secretase and as a key proteinase in the processing of the amyloid precursor protein. Accordingly, the important role that it plays in Alzheimer's disease was manifested. Animal models with an overexpression of ADAM10 revealed a beneficial profile of the metalloproteinase with respect to learning and memory, plaque load and synaptogenesis. Therefore, ADAM10 presents a worthwhile target with respect to the treatment of a neurodegenerative disease such as Morbus Alzheimer. Initially, ADAM10 was suggested to be an enzyme, shaping the extracellular matrix by cleavage of collagen type IV, or to be a tumour n…

ADAM10, myelin-associated metalloendopeptidase

2013

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the structural chemistry and the biological aspects of ADAM10. Originally, ADAM10 was characterized as a myelin-associated metalloproteinase. After cloning the bovine ADAM10 cDNA, the deduced amino acid sequence indicated that the enzyme belonged to the reprolysin subfamily and therefore was named MADM (mammalian disintegrin metalloprotease). The mammalian reprolysin subfamily has been named ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase) and MADM has been designated ADAM10. The ADAM10 homologs in Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans are named kuzbanian and sup-17, respectively. The enzymatic activity of isolated ADAM10 can be monitored in v…

Anti-ADAMTS13 autoantibody profiling in patients with immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

2021

Anti-A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with a ThromboSpondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS13) autoantibodies cause a severe ADAMTS13 deficiency in immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP). ADAMTS13 consists of a metalloprotease (M), a disintegrin-like (D) domain, 8 thrombospondin type 1 repeats (T1-T8), a cysteine-rich (C), a spacer (S), and 2 CUB domains (CUB1-2). We recently developed a high-throughput epitope mapping assay based on small, nonoverlapping ADAMTS13 fragments (M, DT, CS, T2-T5, T6-T8, CUB1-2). With this assay, we performed a comprehensive epitope mapping using 131 acute-phase samples and for the first time a large group of remission samples (n = 50). Ne…

Shedding of interleukin-6 receptor and tumor necrosis factor alpha. Contribution of the stalk sequence to the cleavage pattern of transmembrane prote…

2000

A functionally and structurally diverse group of transmembrane proteins including transmembrane forms of mediators or receptors can be proteolytically cleaved to form soluble growth factors or receptors. Recently, the proteolytic activity responsible for pro-tumor necrosis factor alpha (proTNFalpha) processing has been identified and named TACE (TNFalpha converting enzyme). In experiments with TACE deficient (TACE-/-) fibroblasts we found that 4beta-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-induced shedding of the interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R) is strongly reduced. A basal hydroxamate sensitive release of IL-6R, however, could still be detected. This result demonstrates that TACE plays a role i…

Changing fate

2020

Abstract The alpha-secretase A disintegrin and metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10) and the beta-secretase beta-APP cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE-1) compete in neurons to cleave the amyloid precursor protein (APP). The reaction started by BACE-1, designated the amyloidogenic pathway, leads to formation of neurotoxic amyloid beta peptides (A-betas), while alpha-secretase prevents this and gives rise to an alternative cleavage product (APPs-alpha, nonamyloidogenic pathway). The latter is also known to have neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties. Therefore, identification of mechanisms that lead to a switch in APP processing from the amyloidogenic to the nonamyloidogenic pathway is an attractive avenu…
