Iron and pH regulating the photochemical mineralization of dissolved organic carbon

Solar radiation mineralizes dissolved organic matter (DOM) to dissolved inorganic carbon through photochemical reactions (DIC photoproduction) that are influenced by iron (Fe) and pH. This study addressed as to what extent Fe contributes to the optical properties of the chromophoric DOM (CDOM) and DIC photoproduction at different pH values. We created the associations of Fe and DOM (Fe-DOM) that cover the range of loadings of Fe on DOM and pH values found in freshwaters. The introduced Fe enhanced the light absorption by CDOM independent of pH. Simulated solar irradiation decreased the light absorption by CDOM (i.e., caused photobleaching). This paper explores citizen participation in Swedish and Finnish regulatory processes for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). Finland and Sweden are considered the most advanced worldwide in term of SNF disposal plans. Our aim is to analyze the institutional waste management frameworks, focusing on the role of civil society organizations (CSOs); how lay-people and civil society organizations have been able to participate and contribute to radioactive waste licensing processes; and the nature of radioactive waste risk debates. In the public debate in Finland, same-sex couples’ right to legal recognition is routinely defended by stressing their sameness to heterosexual couples within the discourse of romantic love. This article explores how bisexual women and their partners use these discourses. The five couple interviews were analyzed by implementing discourse analysis. The results highlight how, when taking positions within the discourse of the enduring couple relationship, the interviewees drew on the discourse of romantic love. Tutkimus käsittelee suomalaisten ja ulkomaalaisten sinfoniaorkestereiden tekemää yleisötyötä. Tutkimuskysymyksenä on, kuinka sinfoniaorkesterit ovat kehittäneet perinteistä esitystraditiotaan ja toimintamallejaan yleisötyön keinoin. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytin teoriasidonnaista sisällönanalyysiä ja aineistona toimivat suomalaisten ja ulkomaalaisten orkestereiden internetsivut, joiden kautta pyrin kartoittamaan sinfoniaorkestereiden yleisötyökeinoja ja vertaamaan niitä aiheeseen liittyvään aikaisempaan tutkimukseen. Tangomusiikki ilmiöineen on keskeinen osa suomalaista musiikkikulttuuria. Suomeen tango rantautui jo vuonna 1913, mutta varsinaiseen roihuun tango ilmiönä leimahti 1950- ja 1960-luvuilla. Suomalainen tango on leimautunut perinnekulttuuriksi, joka ei ole kuollut, vaikka sitä ajoittain onkin oltu valmiita hautaamaan: tuoreus on sen vahvuus. Literacy instruction in first grade: classroom‐level associations between reading skills and literacy instruction activities

Background Adapting instruction to individual students' needs is known to be effective, but there is a lack of evidence whether students' reading skills are associated with literacy instruction activities at classroom-level. Both the content of the literacy instruction and teachers' instructional support through instructional management are considered. Methods The data were collected in the context of Finland where first graders' reading skills show great variation at school entry but rapid progress.
