A Band Model of Cambium Development: Opportunities and Prospects
2021
More than 60% of tree phytomass is concentrated in stem wood, which is the result of periodic activity of the cambium. Nevertheless, there are few attempts to quantitatively describe cambium dynamics. In this study, we develop a state-of-the-art band model of cambium development, based on the kinetic heterogeneity of the cambial zone and the connectivity of the cell structure. The model describes seasonal cambium development based on an exponential function under climate forcing which can be effectively used to estimate the seasonal cell production for individual trees. It was shown that the model is able to simulate different cell production for fast-, middle- and slow-growing trees under …

Co-parental Couples and New Families: A Study of the Primary Triad
2015
Abstract Starting from current areas of research in the field of developmental theories, the aim of this work is to analyse parent-child interactions within a primary triad and to consider co-parenting couple and their children as an interactive matrix. In particular, parent-child relationship could be observed trough new developmental units of observation and coding systems in the multiple scenarios of new families. The deepening of this study may promote an effective connection between research and educational support as well as clinical work with families and parental couples.

Parametric sensitivity of a CFD model concerning the hydrodynamics of trickle-bed reactor (TBR)
2016
Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the sensitivity of a multiphase Eulerian CFD model with respect to relations defining drag forces between phases. The mean relative error as well as standard deviation of experimental and computed values of pressure gradient and average liquid holdup were used as validation criteria of the model. Comparative basis for simulations was our own data-base obtained in experiments carried out in a TBR operating at a co-current downward gas and liquid flow. Estimated errors showed that the classical equations of Attou et al. (1999) defining the friction factors Fjk approximate experimental values of hydrodynamic parameters with the best agre…

Reactions of (RNH)3PNSiMe3 (3a, R = tBu; 3b, R = Cy) with trimethylaluminum result in the formation of {Me2Al(μ-NtBu)(μ-NSiMe3)P(NHtBu)2]} (4) and the dimeric trisimidometaphosphate {Me2Al[(μ-NCy)(μ-NSiMe3)P(μ-NCy)2P(μ-NCy)(μ-NSiMe3)]AlMe2} (5a), respectively. The reaction of SP(NHtBu)3 (2a) with 1 or 2 equiv of AlMe3 yields {Me2Al[(μ-S)(μ-NtBu)P(NHtBu)2]} (7) and {Me2Al[(μ-S)(μ-NtBu)P(μ-NHtBu)(μ-NtBu)]AlMe2} (8), respectively. Metalation of 4 with nBuLi produces the heterobimetallic species {Me2Al[(μ-NtBu)(μ-NSiMe3)P(μ-NHtBu)(μ-NtBu)]Li(THF)2} (9a) and {[Me2Al][Li]2[P(NtBu)3(NSiMe3)]} (10) sequentially; in THF solutions, solvation of 10 yields an ion pair containing a spirocyclic tetraimid…
A mobilization regimen to prevent mandibular hypomobility in irradiated patients : an analysis and comparison of two techniques
2007
Radiotherapy, when used in head and neck cancer treatment, can produce side effects in the patients, such as decreased salivary production, xerostomia, opportunistic infections, radiation caries, dysphagia, local discomfort and the limitation of mouth opening. The aim of this study was to evaluate the amplitude of mouth opening in patients before and immediately after the completion of radiotherapy, comparing the effectiveness of two physiotherapy exercises. The irradiated sites included the masticatory muscles. The results demonstrated that there were no statistically significant differences between the two instituted exercises; however there was a trend towards better clinical results in …
Hydrogen isotopes (δ2H) of polyunsaturated fatty acids track bioconversion by zooplankton
2022
1. Organisms at the base of aquatic food webs synthesize essential nutrients, such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), which are transferred to consumers at higher trophic levels. Many consumers, requiring n-3 long-chain (LC) PUFA, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have limited ability to biosynthesize them from the essential dietary precursor α-linolenic acid (ALA) and thus rely on dietary provision of LC-PUFA. 2. We investigated LC-PUFA metabolism in freshwater zooplankton using stable hydrogen isotopes (δ2H) of fatty acids as tracers. We conducted feeding experiments with the freshwater keystone grazer Daphnia to quantify changes in the δ2…
Evaluation of the animal-assisted therapy in Alzheimer's disease
2017
Animal-assisted therapy sessions have been set up in a protected unit for patients with a dementia-related syndrome. The aim is to measure the effects of animal-assisted therapy on behavioural disorders in daily life and care. The results obtained provided some interesting areas to explore and recommendations with a view to optimising the implementation of such a system.
