The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axes are typically conceptualized as mutually inhibitory systems; however, previous studies have found evidence for positive within-person associations (i.e., coupling) between cortisol and testosterone. One developmental hypothesis is that positive testosterone-cortisol coupling is unique to the adolescent period and that coupling becomes attenuated, or even switches direction, in adulthood. Halloysite/Keratin Nanocomposite for Human Hair Photoprotection Coating

We propose a novel keratin treatment of human hair by its aqueous mixtures with natural halloysite clay nanotubes. The loaded clay nanotubes together with free keratin produce micrometer-thick protective coating on hair. First, colloidal and structural properties of halloysite/keratin dispersions and the nanotube loaded with this protein were investigated. Above the keratin isoelectric point (pH = 4), the protein adsorption into the positive halloysite lumen is favored because of the electrostatic attractions. Imaging findings of primary breast sarcoma : results of a first multicenter study

Abstract Purpose To investigate imaging findings in patients with primary breast sarcoma (PBS). Materials and methods A retrospective search in the databases of 10 radiological departments in Germany from 2000 to 2011 was performed. Only histologically proven cases of PBS were included into the study. Pharmacological characterization of uracil nucleotide-preferring P2Y receptors modulating intestinal motility: a study on mouse ileum.

We investigated the possible modulation of the intestinal contractility by uracil nucleotides (UTP and UDP), using as model the murine small intestine. Contractile activity of a mouse ileum longitudinal muscle was examined in vitro as changes in isometric tension. Transcripts encoding for uracil-sensitive receptors was investigated by RT-PCR. UDP induced muscular contractions, sensitive to PPADS, suramin, or MRS 2578, P2Y(6) receptor antagonist, and mimicked by PSB 0474, P2Y(6)-receptor agonist. Synthesis of 2-Prenylated Alkoxylated Benzopyrans by Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons Olefination with PPARα/γ Agonist Activity

[Image: see text] We have synthesized series of 2-prenylated benzopyrans as analogues of the natural polycerasoidol, a dual PPARα/γ agonist with anti-inflammatory effects. The prenylated side chain consists of five or nine carbons with an α-alkoxy-α,β-unsaturated ester moiety. Prenylation was introduced via the Grignard reaction, followed by Johnson–Claisen rearrangement, and the α-alkoxy-α,β-unsaturated ester moiety was introduced by the Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons reaction. Synthetic derivatives showed high efficacy to activate both hPPARα and hPPARγ as dual PPARα/γ agonists. These prenylated benzopyrans emerge as lead compounds potentially useful for preventing cardiometabolic diseases.

Aroma release in the oral cavity after wine intake is influenced by wine matrix composition

The aim of this study has been to investigate if wine matrix composition might influence the interaction between odorants and oral mucosa in the oral cavity during a “wine intake-like” situation. Aroma released after exposing the oral cavity of three individuals to different wines (n = 12) previously spiked with six target aromas was followed by an -in vivo intra-oral SPME approach. Results showed a significant effect of wine matrix composition on the intra-oral aroma release of certain odorants. Among the wine matrix parameters, phenolic compounds showed the largest impact. Modeling of copper fixed-bed biosorption from wastewater by Posidonia oceanica

Biosorption of copper from aqueous solutions by Posidonia oceanica was investigated in batch and fixed-bed experiments. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the removal equilibrium at pH 5.0 and 6.0; experimental data were fitted to Langmuir model with maximum uptake capacities of 56.92 and 85.78 mg g(-1), respectively. Five column experiments were carried out at different feed concentrations. Breakthrough times and continuous sorption isotherm were obtained from breakthrough curves. Differences among batch and continuous isotherms were observed; the maximum uptake capacity in dynamic conditions was found in 56.70 mg g(-1) for final pH between 5.0 and 5.5. The defined adsorption site of sodium on the TiO2(110)–(1×1) surface

The adsorption site of sodium on the TiO2(1 1 0)–(1 × 1) surface was studied by extended X-ray absorption fine structure. For coverage ranging between 0.25 and 0.5 ML, we find that sodium is on an ‘in-between' site where it is bound to two bridging oxygen atoms at 2.25 Å and one in-plane oxygen atom at 2.40 Å, in full agreement with DFT calculations. At higher coverage the site becomes an hollow site where the sodium atom is equidistant to the three oxygen atoms at 2.30 Å, while metallic sodium clusters are also formed at the surface.
