Los retos de la alfabetización de las personas adultas. Creencias de docentes peruanos y propuestas metodológicas
2019
[EN] We address the challenges of adult literacy in an American context from a European perspective. We focus on the context of adult education in Peru, a country with a great cultural and linguistic diversity, based on the interaction produced with a hundred Peruvian teachers linked to the CEBA (Basic Alternative Education) centers. The school context of young people and adults in situations of illiteracy ascribed to the Program for Literacy and Basic Education of Young People and Adults (PAEBA) presents situations of extreme poverty and inequality, which require specific actions and methodologies. From the experience of adult literacy centers and the sociolinguistic reality of teaching in…
Extramural activities and motivation in adult English learners
2017
Lisäksi väestön vanhetessa ikääntyneitä kielenopiskelijoita on yhä enemmän. Tämä tutkimus käsittelee näiden vapaa-ajalla tapahtuvien englanninkielisten oppimisaktiviteettien ja motivaation välistä suhdetta englannin aikuisopiskelijoilla. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, olivatko ne …
Everyday English at work - does it work? : evaluation of an English language course
2004
Kurssiarvioinnista on tehty paljon tutkimuksia, mutta pääosa alan kirjallisuudesta keskittyy kurssiarviointiin yleensä. Kielikurssien arviointiin keskittyvää kirjallisuutta on huomattavasti vähemmän.
Interrelating agency, autonomy and identity in foreign language learning
2014
Foreign language (FL) learning is increasingly examined in terms of the language learning person’s agency, autonomy and identity. What agency refers to in FL learning and how it relates to autonomy and identity nevertheless remains unclear. As theoretical discussions about the interconnections are ambiguous, more empirical evidence is needed. The present article addresses this need, contributing to a fuller understanding of the three notions in FL education. The article explores one student’s FL learning in a general upper secondary school for adults (GUSSA), analysing her language narratives, which refer to her storied, FL related experiences. The findings suggest that agency can be concep…
Meaningful Learning Experiences in the Finnish Teacher Education
2017
During the last few years the change of the school and how the school should change in the first place to meet the challenges of the future have been discussed a great deal. The talk has begun of the cross-disciplinary competences, referred to also as transversal (generic) competences in the curriculum, and of developing teaching towards the integrated modules called multidisciplinary learning modules in the reformed curriculum of the basic education. The multidisciplinary learning modules promote the reaching of the objectives set for the basic education and in particular, the development of the cross-disciplinary competences. This research was carried out in a Finnish class teachers' adult…
From a “Student” to a Lifelong “Consumer” of Education? Constructions of Educability in Adult Students’ Narrative Life Histories
2010
The focus of this study was to examine the constructions of the educable subject of the lifelong learning (LLL) narrative in the narrative life histories of adult students at general upper secondary school for adults (GUSSA). In this study lifelong learning has been defined as a cultural narrative on education, “a system of political thinking” that is not internally consistent, but has contradictory themes embedded within it (Billig et al., 1988). As earlier research has shown and this study also confirms, the LLL narrative creates differences between those who are included and those who fall behind and are excluded from the learning society ideal. Educability expresses socially constructed…
Drivers of job-related learning among low-educated employees in the Nordic countries
2018
This study explored drivers of participation in job-related lifelong learning (LLL) among low-educated mature-aged employees and compared them across four Nordic countries. Workplaces can be low-threshold, effective arenas for development of their skills in work and learning. The paper builds on the Bounded Agency Model and theories of learning motivation, human capital, and workplace learning. We used data from the Survey of Adult Skills (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies) by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The average participation rate was 36%. Results of the logistic regression analyses showed that income, skills use at work, sector…
Whole class interaction in the adult L2-classroom : The case of Swedish for immigrants
2019
This article focuses on verbal interaction in whole class teaching in second language education for adults in Sweden. The article draws on theories treating language as multiple resources that are situated and embedded in material life, and including complex and diverse linguistic, semiotic, physical material and social resources. The material for the article was created in a project based in linguistic ethnography in the form of an action research project, including two municipal Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) schools. The interaction patterns that occurred challenged students’ language proficiency in ways that stimulated meaning negotiation through what we call extended interactions. This s…
