Abstract Purpose A short adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) measure is needed with non-intrusive items that include subjective evaluations of childhood. We validated a short Difficult Childhood Questionnaire (DCQ) that assesses ACEs using personal perceptions of events. Methods The study relied on 2019 data from a representative survey (N = 28,047) in Norway. We examined the DCQ’s factor structure, internal consistency, and discriminant validity in a multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. Research in the field of developmental psycho-criminology shows that conduct disorders and deviant behaviours are frequently associated with traumatic and adverse developmental experiences. Personality traits and psychopathological symptoms also increase the risk of criminality. However, the role of psychopathological symptoms in the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and offending has rarely been researched. Risk factors related to the family environment and mental distress have been identified as risk factors for deviant behaviour and delinquency during adolescence. This paper, in particular, wants to highlight the specificity of adverse childhood experiences in a sample of young prisoners at the Minor Court of Palermo. In addition to the high presence of emotional neglect and psychological and physical abuse, in this sample there are high percentages of psychopathological symptoms, significantly related to an increased risk of recidivism. Previous studies have established child maltreatment as a risk factor for a wide range of problems over the life course such as mental- and somatic health problems, self-harm, alcohol- and drug abuse and decreased work-life participation. Medically unexplained and clinically significant symptoms of pain are highly prevalent in the general population. More than one third of all patients in general practices and various departments of hospitals suffer from somatoform disorders with pain being the main complaint of 70% of these patients.
