POTENTIAL IMPACT OF A NONAVALENT VACCINE ON HPV RELATED LOW-AND HIGH-GRADE CERVICAL INTRAEPITHELIAL LESIONS
2016
Introduction: Demonstration of the role of persistent infection, with high-risk (HR) human papillomaviruses (HPV) as the causal agent of cervical cancer made the development of first and second generation prophylactic vaccines. Bivalent and quadrivalent HPV vaccines are at the moment available in Europe. In 2014 is licensing a nonavalent HPV vaccine against HPV types: 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52/58. The aim of our study was to evaluate the potential impact on HPV infection and related low- and high-grade cervical lesions (LSIL, HSIL) of the candidate nonavalent HPV vaccine, compared to the impact of the quadrivalent, in a female population living in Sicily. Materials and Methods: HPV genotypes w…
Qui Exsitum Parentes Dederunt : a formulation in prose of the immatura (praepostera) mors topos on a roman inscription in ager Tarraconensis (Renau, …
2016
Not only the graphic and linguistic analysis, but also the typical tradition in Latin sepulchral inscriptions, suggest that the final sentence, which does not belong to the usual form epigraphy prose, should be interpreted as a formulation of the immatura (praepostera) mors topos
Human γδ T-Cells: From Surface Receptors to the Therapy of High-Risk Leukemias
2018
γδ T lymphocytes are potent effector cells, capable of efficiently killing tumor and leukemia cells. Their activation is mediated by γδ T-cell receptor (TCR) and by activating receptors shared with NK cells (e.g., NKG2D and DNAM-1). γδ T-cell triggering occurs upon interaction with specific ligands, including phosphoantigens (for Vγ9Vδ2 TCR), MICA-B and UL16 binding protein (for NKG2D), and PVR and Nectin-2 (for DNAM-1). They also respond to cytokines undergoing proliferation and release of cytokines/chemokines. Although at the genomic level γδ T-cells have the potential of an extraordinary TCR diversification, in tissues they display a restricted repertoire. Recent studies have identified …
IL-12 Expands and Differentiates Human Vγ2Vδ2 T Effector Cells Producing Antimicrobial Cytokines and Inhibiting Intracellular Mycobacterial Growth
2019
While IL-12 plays a key role in differentiation of protective CD4+ Th1 response, little is known about mechanisms whereby IL-12 differentiates other T-cell populations. Published studies suggest that predominant Vγ2Vδ2 T cells in humans/nonhuman primates (NHP) are a fast-acting T-cell subset, with capacities to rapidly expand and produce Th1 and cytotoxic cytokines in response to phosphoantigen (E)-4-hydroxy-3-methyl-but-2-enyl pyrophosphate (HMBPP) produced by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) or others. However, whether IL-12 signaling pathway mediates fast-acting and Th1 or anti-microbial features of Vγ2Vδ2 T cells remains poorly defined. Here, we show that IL-12, but not other IL-12 fami…
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance-favour reactive compared to atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance-favour dysplasi…
2005
Abstract Background and objectives: The current study compared the cervical cytological sub-category “atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance-favour reactive (AFR)”, recently recommended to be eliminated by the Bethesda system, to the sub-category “atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance-favour dysplasia (ASC-US)”, in terms of prevalence of coexistent squamous intraepithelial lesions of either low-grade (LSIL) or high-grade (HSIL) and rate of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Study design: One hundred women with AFR and 100 with ASC-US were consecutively included in the study. All patients underwent colposcopy, followed by biopsy when necessary, and were screen…
Increased risk for cervical disease progression of French women infected with the human papillomavirus type 16 E6-350G variant.
2006
Abstract To test the significance of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 and HPV16 E6 variants as risk factors for viral persistence and progression to high-grade lesion, we did a nested case-control study within a cohort study of >15,000 Caucasian French women. Three groups infected with high-risk HPV were compared: (a) women with cleared infection (controls, n = 201), (b) women with persistent infection (cases, n = 87), and (c) women who progressed into high-grade lesion (cases, n = 58). Women with persistent HPV infection and those that progressed into high-grade lesions were likelier to harbor HPV16 than other high-risk HPV types [odds ratio (OR), 2.4; 95% confidence interval (95%…

Minimal Lesions of the Small Intestinal Mucosa: More than Morphology
2020
Minimal lesions of the small bowel are mucosal changes characterized by an increased number of intraepithelial lymphocytes (with or without crypt hyperplasia) and normal villous architecture. Such changes are associated with a wide spectrum of conditions, ranging from food intolerances to infections, and from drugs to immune diseases, with different clinical profiles and manifestations, which complicates the formulation of a differential diagnosis. Patient history, symptom evaluation, and histopathology are the diagnostic features needed to establish a correct diagnosis. Physicians should assist pathologists in formulating a precise morphological evaluation by taking well-oriented small int…
HPV Vaccination: The Position Paper of the Italian Society of Colposcopy and Cervico-Vaginal Pathology (SICPCV)
2020
Human papillomavirus (HPV) related cervical cancer represents an issue of public health priority. The World Health Organization recommended the introduction of HPV vaccination in all national public programs. In Europe, vaccines against HPV have been available since 2006. In Italy, vaccination is recommended and has been freely offered to all young girls aged 11 years since 2008. Three prophylactic HPV vaccines are available against high- and low-risk genotypes. The quadrivalent vaccine contains protein antigens for HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18. The bivalent vaccine includes antigens for HPV 16 and 18. The nonavalent vaccine was introduced in 2014, and it targets HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 4…
Prevalence of human papillomavirus in the saliva of sexually active women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasias
2020
Background The main objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of human papillomavirus-DNA (HPV-DNA) in the saliva of sexually active women with HPV-related cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN) and compare the findings with a healthy control group. The secondary objectives were: 1) to determine the concordance between genital and oral HPV types in sexually active women with HPV-related CIN; 2) to analyze whether sexual habits influence the presence of HPV-related CIN; 3) to determine whether sexual habits influence the presence of oral HPV. Material and Methods Saliva samples were collected from 100 sexually active women, 50 with HPV-related CIN and 50 healthy subjects pres…
