Positive affectivity and health

2011

How to Teach about the Holocaust? Psychological Obstacles in Historical Education in Poland and Germany

2017

Holocaust education in many countries faces severe obstacles, and the effects of such education are far from desirable. Research on German students found that education about the National Socialist period in Germany did not improve intergroup attitudes. Similarly, a study performed on Polish students in Warsaw showed that the extent of Holocaust education did not affect intergroup attitudes and led to more biased vision of the Holocaust. In both countries current Holocaust education seems to convey simplified entitative information about groups—such that all members of perpetrator group are presented as evil, and all bystanders as righteous. Based on psychological research on moral emotions…

This article addresses a rigorous qualitative research whose results reflect the causes that generate the vulnerability of children and adolescents to the influence of gangs and how they pass from victims to victimizers. It describes the role played by adolescents in…

La historia maleable. A propósito de Internet

2006

This essay attempts to assess the impact of the new technologies on the discipline of history. It starts from the assumption that the revolution in information technology has altered the way in which texts are transmitted, the medium in which they are made available, and the ways in which they are read. Moving on, this essay tries to evaluate how far it might affect other fundamental ideas. The changes are various. On the one hand, it could have an effect on the type of source, and to a degree on the critical method with which historians approach whatever type of document. On the other hand, it could also undermine the notion of authorship, not only because many of the new texts in existenc…

Vertical FDI Revisited

2003

This study explores how relative skilled-wage premia affect FDI. Contrary to previous studies based on factor endowment differences, we find strong support for vertical FDI, in the sense that more FDI is conducted in countries where unskilled labor is relatively cheap. In addition, we find that relative skill-premia also affect FDI activities that have previously been associated with horizontal FDI, i.e. local affiliate sales. Consequently, the potential effects of changes in the relative wage costs on international production reallocation within MNEs are large. In fact, if not for the 8% rise in the US skilled wage premium relative to the average host country between 1986- 1994, annual US …

How urban characteristics affect vulnerability to heat and cold: a multi-country analysis

2019

Background The health burden associated with temperature is expected to increase due to a warming climate. Populations living in cities are likely to be particularly at risk, but the role of urban characteristics in modifying the direct effects of temperature on health is still unclear. In this contribution, we used a multi-country dataset to study effect modification of temperature–mortality relationships by a range of city-specific indicators. Methods We collected ambient temperature and mortality daily time-series data for 340 cities in 22 countries, in periods between 1985 and 2014. Standardized measures of demographic, socio-economic, infrastructural and environmental indicators were d…

Landscape in transition in the shadow of 2022 Russia’s invasion in Ukraine – notes from Hungary

2022

This research note focuses on two phenomena: the transformations in the landscape in Hungary as an effect of Russia’s invasion in Ukraine and the welcome/help centers that were established to channel mobility and provide a temporary safe space. I suggest that liminality (which serves as a main explanatory category) is characteristic of both. It is stated that in this context that the bodies of refugees are reminders of the existence of the (state) border, which gets reaffirmed by the process of welcoming and hosting and is also reflected in the visual reminders in the landscape. I also divide the management of the refugee crisis into three phases: spontaneous action, institutionalization, a…

Plasma Insulin Levels and Hypoglycemia Affect Subcutaneous Interstitial Glucose Concentration

2018

[EN] Background: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) accuracy during hypoglycemia is suboptimal. This might be partly explained by insulin or hypoglycemia-induced changes in the plasma interstitial subcutaneous (SC) fluid glucose gradient. The aim of the present study was to assess the role of plasma insulin (PI) and hypoglycemia itself in the plasma and interstitial SC fluid glucose concentration in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Eleven subjects with type 1 diabetes (age 36.59.1 years, HbA(1c) 7.90.4% [62.8 +/- 2.02mmol/mol]; mean +/- standard deviation) were evaluated under hyperinsulinemic euglycemia and hypoglycemia. Each subject underwent two randomized crossover clam…
