The article presents an overview of the Ethiopian Semitic (ES) languages spoken in the Horn of Africa. Among the presently spoken Semitic languages, ES languages comprise more than 80% and are divided into a northern and a southern group. Although this division is basically regional, there is a strong morpho-syntactic support for this classification. ES languages show a higher complexity in the use of concatenative and nonconcatentative morphemes for various grammatical categories. This rich morphological behavior, the SOV order, and other peculiar morphophonemic features are assumed to be the result of language contact, but sufficient data for this claim are still lacking.
Functional characterization of protein variants of the human multidrug transporter ABCC2 by a novel targeted expression system in fibrosarcoma cells

The multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2/ABCC2) is involved in the efflux of endogenous and xenobiotic substrates, including several anticancer and antiviral drugs. The functional consequences of ABCC2 protein variants remain inconsistent, which may be due to shortcomings of the in vitro assays used. To study systematically the functional consequences of nonsynonymous ABCC2 variants, we used a novel “Screen and Insert” (ScIn) technology to achieve stable and highly reproducible expression of 13 ABCC2 variants in HT1080 cells. The Afrotropical genus Rhinolaetia Schouteden, 1965 and its systematic position within Scutelleridae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera)

The monotypic Afrotropical genus Rhinolaetia Schouteden, 1865 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Scutelleridae) is redescribed. The head, wings, female genitalia and habitus of Rhinolaetia overlaeti Schouteden, 1965 are illustrated. Morphological features of Rhinolaetia and selected representatives of six scutellerid subfamilies are listed and compared. The systematic position of this genus is briefly discussed. Close affinity of Rhinolaetia overlaeti with representatives of subfamilies Odontotarsinae and Odontoscelinae is observed.

Currently, over a third of children not in school live in countries considered being as fragile. These countries, which are mainly located in sub-Saharan Africa, will not reach the objectives of Education For All for 2015. Universal primary education (UPE) is one of the main aims of Official Development Aid (ODA). In the last years, the issues of aid effectiveness were widely discussed in the literature. Little empirical evidence of its effectiveness exists, particularly for fragile states. In these countries, mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa, universal primary schooling will be off target for 2015, so invalidates the Millennium Development Goals.
