Impaired Health-Related Quality of Life in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Psychosocial Impact and Coping Styles in a National German Sample

2001

The purpose of this study is to give a detailed survey of the disease-specific and generic quality of life (HRQOL) of adult patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Germany.1322 patients suffering from IBD were examined in a cross-sectional study. A questionnaire assessing disease-specific and generic quality of life, coping, and hopelessness was sent to members of the German Crohn/Colitis association.Compared to the general population, the generic HRQOL in IBD patients is significantly reduced. Active coping has a negative influence on patients' generic physical HRQOL during an active phase (beta = -0.31), while this association is not present in the case of patients in …

The main trends in the palaeodemography of the 7th-18th century population of Latvia

2006

The study represents palaeodemographic research of osteological material of 3304 individuals from the funds of the Anthropological Laboratory of the Institute of History of the University of Latvia in Riga, dating from the 7 th to the 18 th century AD. Compensated life expectancy at birth is varying between 20.3 and 22.2 years during the research period. Crude mortality has changed between 49.3 and 45 %o. In the early period (7 th - 13 th century) there is a significant male prevalence (2.2 - 1.4); female life expectancy at the age of 20 is on average 6.6 years less than for males. This difference decreases to 5.4 years in the 13 th - 18 th century. According to historical demography, femal…

Prevalence of glaucoma and distribution of intraocular pressure in a population. The Casteldaccia Eye Study.

2009

IOP was measured in 1062 middle-aged and elderly subjects of a small Sicilian town, enrolled in a population based survey. The mean IOP was 15.1 +/- 3.7 mmHg without interocular or sex differences. A small but significant age-dependent increase of IOP was found. Circadian and seasonal influences were recorded: IOP was higher in the morning and in winter. The prevalence of chronic open-angle glaucoma was 1.2%, but it grew to 3.6 if only subjects aged 70 years or more were considered. IOP of 24 mmHg or more was found in 2.7%, while 4.3% of subjects showed IOP of 21 mmHg or more. This survey shows that mean IOP of the Mediterranean population studied is similar to the IOP found in other epidem…

The early clinical phenotype of Fabry disease: a study on 35 European children and adolescents.

2003

Fabry disease (FD) is a debilitating progressive multisystem X-linked lysosomal storage disorder. It was generally believed that the disease affects only adult males. Through systematic pedigree analysis, we identified 35 paediatric FD patients (age 1 to 21 years, mean 12.6 years) in 25 families. Predominant signs in this cohort were: acroparesthesia, hypohidrosis, and cornea verticillata. Neurological and psychological changes, such as tinnitus, recurrent vertigo, headache, diminished level of activity, fatigue, and depression were often observed. Angiokeratoma and gastrointestinal symptoms were frequent. Some patients also showed cardiac abnormalities. Six children and adolescents (three …

Age of onset of episodic and chronic cluster headache – a review of a large case series from a single headache centre

2016

Background In the largest case series of cluster headache (CH) published in the literature, age of onset varies between 29.6 and 31.6 years. Differences in onset age based on gender and subtype diagnosis are reported, while there are only few data on patients with childhood and elderly onset. We therefore deemed it useful to review our own large case series of CH patients. Methods The age of onset of cluster headache was investigated in a consecutive case series of 808 patients (585 men and 223 women), including 686 (503 men and 183 women) with episodic cluster headache (ECH), 103 (66 men and 37 women) with chronic cluster headache (CCH), and 19 with an indeterminate form of CH (16 men and …

A five-year retrospective study of the epidemiological characteristics and visual outcomes of patients hospitalized for ocular trauma in a Mediterran…

2008

Abstract Background To determine the epidemiological characteristics and visual outcome of ocular trauma in southern Italy. Methods All cases of ocular trauma admitted to Department of Ophthalmology of Palermo University, Italy, from January 2001–December 2005 were retrospectively reviewed for open- or closed-globe injury (OGI or CGI). Data extracted included age, sex, residence, initial and final visual acuity (VA), cause and treatment of injury, hospitalization. The injuries were classified by Ocular Trauma Classification System (OTCS) and Birmingham Eye Trauma Terminology (BETT). We also referred to the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) in evaluating the final visual outcome. Results Of the 298 …

The PACE study: Past-year prevalence of migraine in Parma's adult general population

2012

Background: In the literature there are few data about the prevalence of primary headaches, including migraine, in the Italian general population. The PACE study (PArma CEfalea, or ‘Headache in Parma’) is an observational study aimed at detecting the prevalence and clinical features of primary headaches in the city of Parma’s adult general population. Materials and methods: A total of 904 subjects representative of Parma’s adult general population were interviewed face-to-face by a physician from the Parma Headache Centre. They were given a specially designed and validated questionnaire for the diagnosis of primary headaches according to the ICHD-II criteria. Results: Past-year adjusted pr…

Papillary thyroid cancer incidence in the volcanic area of Sicily.

2009

Abstract BACKGROUND: The steadily increasing incidence of thyroid cancer has been attributed mostly to more sensitive thyroid nodule screening. However, various environmental factors, such as those associated with volcanic areas, cannot be excluded as risk factors. We evaluated thyroid cancer incidence in Sicily, which has a homogenous population and a province (Catania) that includes the Mt Etna volcanic area. METHODS: In a register-based epidemiological survey, we collected all incident thyroid cancers in Sicily from January 1, 2002, through December 31, 2004. The age-standardized incidence rate for the world population (ASR(w)) was calculated and expressed as the number of thyroid cancer…

Incidence of venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing thoracotomy for lung cancer

2008

Limited information exists on the incidence of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (vTE) in patients undergoing chest surgery for lung cancer. Several factors increase the thromboembolic risk in patients undergoing surgery for lung cancer: the intrinsic procoagulant effect of cancer, extensive surgical intervention, dependent limb position in the operating room, and vessel injury consequent to the operation. Furthermore, these patients might be especially vulnerable to pulmonary embolism (PE) because of the loss of lung tissue and the presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular diseases caused by smoking.t Older studies found a very high incidence of thromboembolic eve…

Prevalence of corneal astigmatism before cataract surgery.

2008

To analyze the prevalence and presentation patterns of corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery candidates.University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain.Refractive and keratometric values were measured before surgery in patients having cataract extraction. Descriptive statistics of refractive and keratometric cylinder data were analyzed and correlated by age ranges.Refractive and keratometric data from 4,540 eyes of 2,415 patients (mean age 60.59 years +/- 9.87 [SD]; range 32 to 87 years) differed significantly when the patients were divided into 10-year subsets. There was a trend toward less negative corneal astigmatism values, except the steepest corneal radius and the J(45) vector component, in…
