A chemical status predictor. A methodology based on World-Wide sediment samples.

2015

As a consequence of the limited resources of underdeveloped countries and the limited interest of the developed ones, the assessment of the chemical quality of entire water bodies around the world is a utopia in the near future. The methodology described here may serve as a first approach for the fast identification of water bodies that do not meet the good chemical status demanded by the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). It also allows estimating the natural background (or reference values of concentration) of the areas under study using a simple criterion. The starting point is the calculation the World-Wide Natural Background Levels (WWNBLs) and World-Wide Threshold Values (WWTVs…

Invisible work, unseen hazards: the health of women immigrant household service workers in Spain

2009

BACKGROUND: Household service work has been largely absent from occupational health studies. We examine the occupational hazards and health effects identified by immigrant women household service workers. Data were collected between September 2006 and May 2007 through focus groups and semi-structured individual interviews. Data were separated for analysis by documentation status and sorted using a mixed-generation process. In a second phase of analysis, data on psychosocial hazards were organized using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questi…

Self-care ability among home-dwelling older people in rural areas in southern Norway

2011

Results: A total of 780 persons were found to have higher self-care ability and 240 to have lower self-care ability using the Self-care Ability Scale for the Elderly. Self-care ability was found to be closely related to health-related issues, self-care agency, sense of coherence, nutritional state and mental health, former profession, and type of dwelling. Predictors for high self-care ability were to have higher self-care agency, not receiving family help, having low risk for undernutrition, not perceiving helplessness, being able to prepare food, being active and having lower age. Conclusions: When self-care ability is reduced in older people, caregivers have to be aware about how this ca…

Advancing the treatment of human agency in the analysis of regional economic development: Illustrated with three Norwegian cases

2021

Human agency has become a core topic in economic geography complementing traditional, structural approaches to explain regional development. This paper contributes firstly with a discussion of the theoretical and conceptual relationships between the agency of individuals, organizations, and systems. Secondly, it proposes a novel analytical framework for studying how human agency, combined with external changes affects regional economic development, and how regional structural preconditions and external changes explain the activation of change agency. Thirdly, the relevance of the framework is examined through comparative studies of about 20 years of industrial development in three Norwegian…

FROM SEEKERS TO ACTIVISTS

2009

Media culture is a firm part of youth cultures today. Media can also be seen as one empowering technology in the information society alongside traditional school and government. What kind of civic identities are young people constructing in contemporary media culture? This article discusses media-saturated youth and audience agency, drawing on Dahlgren's ideas of civic culture. Relying on empirical data from two case studies in Finland, we will introduce a typology of civic identities, which the young construct as members of the public in relation to media. Our first case study is a youth civic website called Vaikuttamo.net and the second is the Youth Voice Editorial Board, which consists o…

Global Pinoys: The Archipelago of Migration

2017

The Republic of the Philippines is one of the top exporters of migrant labor throughout the world. Millions of Filipino overseas workers can be found in North America, the Middle East, Western Europe, Australia and Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Malaysia). Since the 1970s, the Philippine government has encouraged labor migration as a way to alleviate unemployment at home and to gather remittances used to boost spending in the domestic economy. The government’s Philippine Overseas Employment Agency manages the implementation of labor agreements with partner countries and exerts some control on the myriad of private agencies recruiting Philippine labor for foreign jobs. Many expatr…

Assessing Effects of eGovernment Initiatives Based on a Public Value Framework

2012

Published version of a chapter in the book: Electronic Government. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-33489-4_21 Assessing effects of eGovernment initiatives is considered an important but challenging endeavor. Assessments are, among other things, important to justify e-government investments. They are challenging because they are complex, often based on locally defined indicators, many times over-emphasizing financial effects, imprecise, faced with a number of contingencies and very seldom validated. Consequently, effect assessments can be seen as imprecise and difficult to compare across different initiatives. This paper addresses some of the challen…

2020

Abstract Introduction Since 2008, Pole Emploi (PE), the French government agency responsible for handling unemployment matters and unemployment benefits, has undergone a major restructuring, influencing the work of careers advisers (CA) and the support and follow-up services provided to job seekers (JS). This study examines the representations of PE and support among both CAs and JSs. Objectives The aim of the study is to contribute to a reflection on CA training. Method In the first study, 84 CAs and 125 JSs responded to a questionnaire using a word association task (WAT). In the second study, interviews were conducted with 22 CAs and 19 JSs. The data were analyzed based on a lexicometric …
