Pollinator decline is an emerging worldwide problem with serious repercussions on agriculture and environment. Around one third of human food relies on insect pollination, and most of the flowering plants need pollinators to survive. Honey bee is the main pollinator in environments where anthropogenic pressure has reduced the number of native pollinators, like urban, rural and agricultural areas. Insect immune systems can recognize specific pathogens and prime offspring immunity. High specificity of immune priming can be achieved when insect females transfer immune elicitors into developing oocytes. The molecular mechanism behind this transfer has been a mystery. Here, we establish that the egg-yolk protein vitellogenin is the carrier of immune elicitors. Using the honey bee, Apis mellifera, model system, we demonstrate with microscopy and western blotting that vitellogenin binds to bacteria, both Paenibacillus larvae – the gram-positive bacterium causing American foulbrood disease – and to Escherichia coli that represents gram-negative bacteria. HPLC Determination of Polyphenols from Calendula officinalis L. Flowers

Abstract Romanian spontaneous flora provides a lot of resources for the determination of different chemical compounds. This study uses flower samples from Calendula officinalis L. extracted through maceration. The chemical compounds determined were: (+)-catechin, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid, rutin, resveratrol and quercetin. They were analyzed by using an optimized HPLC method. (+)-Catechin, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and quercetin could not be identified in the analyzed samples. Research on early medieval and medieval archaeoiogical and anthropological cemeteries is not the easiest. Archaeoiogical and anthropological research in Byczyna showed how valuable e data from cemetery research is, how much we can leam about the community living in medieval cities. Analyzing bone material at the preliminary stage of research, it can beseen that the health condition of the inhabitants of medieval Byczyna was not good. Almost half of the examined skeletons have traces of various diseases, especially degenerative diseases and injuries. There were also cases of conditions that indicate that the diet of the dead did not have basie nutrients.

Short-term effects of potassium fertilization on the hydraulic conductance of Laurus nobilis L.

This study reports experimental evidence on the effect of short term potassium fertilization on potassium uptake, tissue concentration and hydraulic conductance of pot-grown laurel plants. Potassium uptake and loading into the xylem of laurel seedlings increased within 24 h from fertilization. Potassium was not accumulated in roots and leaves, but the [K+] of xylem sap was 80% higher in fertilized plants (+K) than in potassium starved plants (-K), likely as a result of recirculation between xylem and phloem.
