A Particular Focus on the Prevalence of α- and β-Thalassemia in Western Sicilian Population from Trapani Province in the COVID-19 Era
2023
Thalassemia is a Mendelian inherited blood disease caused by α- and β-globin gene mutations, known as one of the major health problems of Mediterranean populations. Here, we examined the distribution of α- and β-globin gene defects in the Trapani province population. A total of 2,401 individuals from Trapani province were enrolled from January 2007 to December 2021, and routine methodologies were used for detecting the α- and β-globin genic variants. Appropriate analysis was also performed. Eight mutations in the α globin gene showed the highest frequency in the sample studied; three of these genetic variants represented the 94% of the total α-th…
« Un inconnu dans la maison : l’enfant dans ¿ Quién puede matar a un niño ? (Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, 1974) »
2008
This article deals with ¿Quién puede matar a un niño? directed by Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, more famous thanks to his TV film series Historias para no dormir. In this film, children use to play an essential part in the development of a pure fantastic style (in Todorov’s terms), i.e. based on the irruption of unexplainable elements inside a perfectly normal realistic context. As some critics as Rosset have pointed out, the feeling of anguish does arise from such a realistic context, from that otherness within the child, the human being we are more reluctant to fear, the one we hardly view with suspicion Este artículo trata de la obra de Narciso Ibáñez Serrador y, en particular, de uno de sus …
Decompressive Craniectomy Improves QTc Interval in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients
2020
Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is commonly associated with cardiac dysfunction, which may be reflected by abnormal electrocardiograms (ECG) and/or contractility. TBI-related cardiac disorders depend on the type of cerebral injury, the region of brain damage and the severity of the intracranial hypertension. Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is commonly used to reduce intra-cranial hypertension (ICH). Although DC decreases ICH rapidly, its effect on ECG has not been systematically studied. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in ECG in patients undergoing DC. Methods: Adult patients without previously known cardiac diseases treated for isolated TBI with DC were studied. EC…
Music, vibrotactile mediation and bodily sensations in anorexia nervosa : "It's like I can really feel my heart beating"
2020
This article presents the theoretical, scientific, and methodological foundations for the design and implementation of an innovative technological and clinical platform that combined sound, music, and vibrotactile mediation used in a therapeutic setting by adolescents suffering from anorexia nervosa. In 2019, we carried out a pilot experiment with a group of 8 adolescent patients hospitalized in the Eating Disorders Unit of the Department of Adolescent and Young Adult Psychiatry of the Institut Mutualiste Montsouris in Paris. Within this clinical framework, we aimed to create conditions suitable for patients to reinvest in their “disaffected” bodily zones and internal experiences through re…

Intravenous iron therapy in patients with heart failure. A double-edged sword
2013
We read with interest the article of Beck-da-Silva et al., who recently concluded that intravenous (IV) iron seems to be superior over oral supplementation for improving functional capacity of heart failure patients [1]. Irrespective of the study design, involving comparison of functional outcomes between two different means of iron supplementation, we raise some clinical issues about the rationale underlying this investigation. According to the data published by Beck-da-Silva et al., the modest number of patients (n = 23) enrolled in this multicenter investigation had moderate anemia (i.e., hemoglobin concentration comprised between 90 and 120 g/L) but no evidence of iron deficiency, which…
Laser fluence, repetition rate and pulse duration effects on paint ablation
2006
Abstract The efficiency (mm3/(J pulse)) of laser ablation of paint was investigated with nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG lasers (λ = 532 nm) as a function of the following laser beam parameters: pulse repetition rate (1–10,000 Hz), laser fluence (0.1–5 J/cm2) and pulse duration (5 ns and 100 ns). In our study, the best ablation efficiency (η ≅ 0.3 mm3/J) was obtained with the highest repetition rate (10 kHz) at the fluence F = 1.5 J/cm2. This ablation efficiency can be associated with heat accumulation at high repetition rate, which leads to the ablation threshold decrease. Despite the low thermal diffusivity and the low optical absorption of the paint (thermal confinement regime), the ablation th…
Applications and non-idealities of submicron Al–AlOx–Nb tunnel junctions
2016
We have developed a technique to fabricate sub-micron, 0.6µm×0.6µm Al-AlOx-Nb tunnel junctions using a standard e-beam resist, angle evaporation and double oxidation of the tunneling barrier, resulting in high quality niobium, as determined by the the high measured values of the critical temperature TC ∼ 7.5 K and the gap ∆ ∼ 1.3 meV. The devices show great promise for local nanoscale thermometry in the temperature range 1 - 7.5 K. Electrical characterization of the junctions was performed at sub-Kelvin temperatures both with and without an external magnetic field, which was used to suppress superconductivity in Al and thus bring the junction into a normal-metal-insulator-superconductor (NI…

Characteristics of acute toxicity dynamics of selected toxicants on aquatic crustaceans
2019
Determining the value of a half-effective or half-life concentration or dose of toxicant is the main purpose of acute toxicity studies, and this is also the most commonly used value in the toxicity characteristics of substances. By conducting tests that meet the criteria and requirements for the determination of acute toxicity, due to the use of appropriate mathematical tools and concentrations resulting in complete lethal effects in the studied groups, considerably more important values can be achieved, which give a possibility for the analysis of the entire process's dynamics, as well as determining the threshold values of the effect time and toxicant concentration. This was the purpose o…
