Governance of organic cocoa production : An analysis of EU regulation through the framework of multilevel governance
2022
Motivation While organic agriculture is seen as the best way to achieve sustainable agriculture, the question of how actors in the sector can help remains unresolved. This article seeks to contribute to the global determination to resolve environmental challenges through sustainable agricultural practices grounded in multilevel governance. Purpose The article examines existing regulations governing the production and importation of organic cocoa. Methods and approach Multilevel governance is used as a theoretical and methodological tool to examine the discursive and material struggles which challenge the promotion of organic cocoa, using a content analysis of European Union (EU) regulations…
DEVELOPMENT TRENDS OF BIOGAS
2015
All over the world, researches are made in order to improve the technologies, the operational and process stability and performance of biogas plants, because the world markets for biogas increased considerably in Europe and all over the world. In this paper we studied the most important parameters related to a biogas plant, starting from the ecologic landfill of Cristian, Sibiu, a landfill which storages industrial and household waste. In this respect, we studied operational parameters, such as organic load and hydraulic retention time, and parameters for evaluation of a biogas plant. Also, we made a case study concerning the evaluation of used waters in the landfill described above under t…
The Lucania Apennines. A Neo-Anthropocene landscape
2019
The contribution offers a cross-section of the situation of the Italian landscape through the reflection about the principle of "landscape as a human right" and looking at the way in which territorial policies are able to create, or deform, landscapes through targeted and specific actions in agriculture or energy policies fields. The specific condition of the Park of the "Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri Laonegrese" in Southern Italy (Basilicata) is used to show how a process of territorial planning of the Park can be an opportunity to rethink the creation of landscapes under the light of conditions related to uses agricultural and energy resources of the territory, in a compatible way with the …
The Lucania Apennines : a Neo-Anthropocene landscape
2019
The contribution explains the specific condition of the Park of the "Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri Laonegrese" in Southern Italy (Basilicata) taking into account the concept of "Right to the Landscape". It is used to show how a process of territorial planning of the Park can be an opportunity to rethink the creation of landscapes under the light of conditions related to uses agricultural and energy resources of the territory, in a compatible way with the protection of nature.
Testing the shape-similarity hypothesis between particle-size distribution and water retention for Sicilian soils
2012
Application of the Arya and Paris (AP) model to estimate the soil water retention curve requires a detailed description of the particlesize distribution (PSD) but limited experimental PSD data are generally determined by the conventional sieve-hydrometer (SH) method. Detailed PSDs can be obtained by fitting a continuous model to SH data or performing measurements by the laser diffraction (LD) method. The AP model was applied to 40 Sicilian soils for which the PSD was measured by both the SH and LD methods. The scale factor was set equal to 1.38 (procedure AP1) or estimated by a logistical model with parameters gathered from literature (procedure AP2). For both SH and LD data, procedure AP2 …
TESTING THE GRAIN-SIZE DISTRIBUTION DETERMINED BY LASER DIFFRACTOMETRY FOR SICILIAN SOILS
2012
In this paper the soil grain-size distribution determined by Laser Diffraction method (LDM) is tested using the Sieve-Hydrometer method (SHM) applied for 747 soil samples representing a different texture classification, sampled in Sicily. 005_Di_Stefano(599)_39 28-12-2011 15:01 Pagina 45 The analysis showed that the sand content measured by SHM can be assumed equal to the one determined by LDM. An underestimation of the clay fraction measured by LDM was obtained with respect to the SHM and a set of equations useful to refer laser diffraction measurements to SHM was calibrated using the measurements carried out for 635 soil samples. Finally, the proposed equations were tested using independe…
New tree monitoring systems: from Industry 4.0 to Nature 4.0
2019
This is the accepted version of the article "New tree monitoring systems: from Industry 4.0 to Nature 4.0" published as final paper in Annals of Silvicultural Research Volume 43, Issue 2, 2019, Pages 84-88, http://dx.doi.org/10.12899/asr-1847 Abstract - Recently, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have grown rapidly and represent now a unique opportunity to improve our environmental monitoring capabilities at extremely low costs. IoT is a new system of thinking in which objects, animals or people are equipped with unique identifiers and transfer data to a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. IoT has evolved from the convergence of wirele…

CHEMICAL CONTAMINATION OF BEE HONEY – IDENTIFYING SENSOR OF THE ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION
2005
Changes in the quality of bee honey are also caused by the contamination with micro-polluting agents, toxic to consumers. This research is about chemical contamination of honey. The honey used in this study was harvested from beehives situated in Copşa Mica (Sibiu region), famous for the ecological unbalances induced by the non-ferrous metal industry through pollution produced by SC Sometra SA. The amount of Pb, Cd and Zn contained in the samples harvested in the area specifi ed above have been determined using an atomic absorption spectrometer AAS. Amounts of heavy metals above the admitted limit by the OMS 975/88 have been discovered. The results suggested that honey could be used to dete…
