A parody of action : Politics and pantomime in Agamben's critique of Arendt
2021
Introduction
2022
In the introduction to the volume, the editors explain the overarching aim of the volume and contextualize the main themes of its chapters. Even if the notions of biopolitics and biopower have played a crucial role in philosophy, the humanities, and the social sciences over the last decades, they have been used in various and at times diverging senses, which has also produced different narratives about the history of biopolitics. The main aim of the volume is to clarify whether and to what extent the concept of biopolitics is applicable to antiquity. To answer such questions, the chapters collected in the volume address three main topics, namely the possible presence of biopolitical discour…
The impurity of praxis : Arendt and Agamben
2023
AbstractIf politics is understood as a foundational and open-ended activity, a general problem that arises from such a framing concerns the question of how to sustain the possibility of continuous openings without converting action into permanence and closure. In this article, we approach this problematic by treating Hannah Arendt as an exemplary figure in the current of political thought that emphasizes the indeterminate nature of action. We focus more specifically on how Arendt addressed the question of sustaining action by exploring the role of forgiveness, promises, divided power, and principles of action in her thought. While we show that the task of sustaining the indeterminacy of act…
Power training and postmenopausal hormone therapy affect transcriptional control of specific co-regulated gene clusters in skeletal muscle
2010
At the moment, there is no clear molecular explanation for the steeper decline in muscle performance after menopause or the mechanisms of counteractive treatments. The goal of this genome-wide study was to identify the genes and gene clusters through which power training (PT) comprising jumping activities or estrogen containing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may affect skeletal muscle properties after menopause. We used musculus vastus lateralis samples from early stage postmenopausal (50–57 years old) women participating in a yearlong randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial with PT and HRT interventions. Using microarray platform with over 24,000 probes, we identified 665 diffe…
Determination of butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, benzophenone-3, octyl dimethyl PABA and octyl methoxycinnamate in lipsticks.
2003
The complex composition of lipstick formulations usually needs the use of organic solvents for sample dissolution. A treatment based on dissolution of cosmetic samples in ethanol-water (70 : 30, v/v) by use of ultrasonic irradiation is proposed. A C(18) stationary phase and an isocratic mobile phase of ethanol:water:acetic acid (70 : 29.5 : 0.5, v/v/v) with a flow rate of 1 mL min(-1) and an injection volume of 20 microL is proposed for the high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination of four UV-filters, and detection was carried out at 309 nm. The limit of the chromatographic detection was 7.0 microg mL(-1) for butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, 1.5 microg mL(-1) for benzophenone-3…
Human immunosenescence: is it infectious?
2005
Morbidity and mortality due to infectious disease is greater in the elderly than in the young, at least partly because of age-associated decreased immune competence, which renders individuals more susceptible to pathogens. This susceptibility is particularly evident for novel infectious agents such as in severe acute respiratory syndrome but is also all too apparent for common pathogens such as influenza. Many years ago, it was noted that the elderly possessed oligoclonal expansions of T cells, especially of CD8(+) cells. At the same time, it was established that cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositivity was associated with many of the same phenotypic and functional alterations to T-cell immunit…
The effect of aquatic exercise on physical functioning in the older adult: a systematic review with meta-analysis
2015
Background ageing and sedentary behaviour cause negative changes in the neuromuscular systems of healthy older adults resulting in a decrease in physical functioning. Exercising in water (aquatic exercise, AE) has been shown to be effective at improving physical functioning in this population; however, no systematic review with meta-analysis has been published. Purpose to investigate the effect of AE on physical functioning in healthy older adults compared to control or land-based exercise (LE) through a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials. Data sources Medline, Embase, Cinahl, PEDro, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, published before 31st Decem…
Products of snowflaked Euclidean lines are not minimal for looking down
2017
We show that products of snowflaked Euclidean lines are not minimal for looking down. This question was raised in Fractured fractals and broken dreams, Problem 11.17, by David and Semmes. The proof uses arguments developed by Le Donne, Li and Rajala to prove that the Heisenberg group is not minimal for looking down. By a method of shortcuts, we define a new distance $d$ such that the product of snowflaked Euclidean lines looks down on $(\mathbb R^N,d)$, but not vice versa.
