Efficient electroorganic synthesis of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene derivatives

2012

2,3,6,7,10,11-Hexahydroxytriphenylene of good quality and purity can be obtained via anodic treatment of catechol ketals and subsequent acidic hydrolysis. The electrolysis is conducted in propylene carbonate circumventing toxic and expensive acetonitrile. The protocol is simple to perform and superior to other chemical or electrochemical methods. The key of the method is based on the low solubility of the anodically trimerized product. The shift of potentials is supported by cyclic voltammetry studies.

Immigrant entrepreneur firm start-up behavior and reasoning : a reflective study of causation, effectuation and bricolage

2013

Entrepreneurship research studies how and why firms come into being, survive and grow (Davidsson, 2004; Gartner, 1985; Schumpeter, 1934). Early literature has proposed a linear model of entrepreneurship which is intentional (Bird, 1988), opportunity discovery (Kirzner, 1997; Shane and Venkataraman, 2000) and goal & strategy oriented (Wiklund & Shepherd, 2005). Being a mainstream in the earlier research, it is labelled as causation model by Sarasvathy (2001). Several scholars such as Baker & Nelson (2005) and Sarasvathy (2001a, b; 2008) questioned the validity of the model and proposed two additional models to the classic model: Effectuation (Sarasvathy, 1998) and Entrepreneurial Bricolage (…

Nucleation and cavitation in parahydrogen

2012

We have used a density functional approach to investigate thermal homogeneous nucleation and cavitation in parahydrogen. The effect of electrons as seeds of heterogeneous cavitation in liquid parahydrogen is also discussed within the capillary model. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Differentiation of herpes simplex virus-induced fusion from without and fusion from within by cyclosporin A and compound 48/80.

1991

Treating strains of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in culture with either cyclosporin A or compound 48/80, allowed the strains to be divided into two groups. Group 1 contains the strains ANG and HFEM of HSV-1 and Lux syn (HSV-2) producing fusion from within (FFWI) and fusion from without (FFWO). Cyclosporin A fails to inhibit both types of fusion at concentrations up to 100 microM. Strains ANG and HFEM belong to the syn 3 marker locus group identified for HSV-1. Group 2 contains all other fusion-producing strains of HSV tested so far. Cyclosporin A inhibits FFWI at concentrations as low as 10 to 20 microM. These strains belong to the syn locus marker groups 1, 2, 4 and 5. From the fact that mut…

Characterization of the Receptor Protein-Tyrosine Kinase Gene from the Marine Sponge Geodia cydonium

1996

Cells are provided with well-defined receptor structures (signal receivers) which interact with their corresponding ligands (signal molecules) and initiate a signal transduction pathway resulting in a change of cellular behavior or metabolism (Stoddard et al. 1992). It is well established that cells from both eukaryotic protists (single-cell organisms) and from Metazoa (multicellular organisms) respond to signals emanating from the extracellular environment. The extracellular signals to which protists respond are mainly nutrients which diffuse to their surfaces, and in most cases cross the cell membrane. In addition, they are able to bind peptide hormones, e.g., insulin or adrenocorticotrop…

Abdominal-B and caudal inhibit the formation of specific neuroblasts in the Drosophila tail region

2013

The central nervous system of Drosophila melanogaster consists of fused segmental units (neuromeres), each generated by a characteristic number of neural stem cells (neuroblasts). In the embryo, thoracic and anterior abdominal neuromeres are almost equally sized and formed by repetitive sets of neuroblasts, whereas the terminal abdominal neuromeres are generated by significantly smaller populations of progenitor cells. Here we investigated the role of the Hox gene Abdominal-B in shaping the terminal neuromeres. We show that the regulatory isoform of Abdominal-B (Abd-B.r) not only confers abdominal fate to specific neuroblasts (e.g. NB6-4) and regulates programmed cell death of several proge…

Theoretical study on travelling web dynamics and instability under non-homogeneous tension

2013

Problems of dynamics and stability of a moving web, travelling between two rollers at a constant velocity, are studied using analytical approaches. Transverse vibrations of the web are described by a partial differential equation that includes the centrifugal force, in-plane tension, elastic reaction and nonstationary inertial terms. The model of a thin elastic plate subjected to bending and non-homogeneous tension is used to describe the bending moment and the distribution of membrane forces. The stability of the plate is investigated with the help of studies of small out-of-plane vibrations. The influence of linearly distributed in-plane tension on the characteristics of the web vibration…
