Resistance Is Useless! (And So Are Resilience and Reworking): Migrants in the Finnish Labour Market

AbstractIn Finland, integration is discussed in terms of labour market success. Finding work tends to occur in the ‘secondary’ labour market as migrants have difficulty accessing the more secure jobs of the ‘primary’ labour market. This chapter draws on 11 qualitative biographical narratives of migrants and refugees, looking for turning points and epiphanies about their job-seeking experiences. We classify these as agentic acts of resilience, reworking, and resistance, borrowing from Cindi Katz’s framework. Within the current political context of global migration the concept of ‘identity’ has played a major role in the struggle between assimilative and exclusionary practices and policies. Such policies in many cases are the result of a wronged imagination about human identity and the subjects who possess it. Introduction: Arising evidence suggests that resistance training has the potential to induce beneficial modulation of biomarker profile. To date, however, only immediate responses to resistance training have been investigated using high-throughput metabolomics whereas the effects of chronic resistance training on biomarker profile have not been studied in detail. The results of the study of many specimens preserved in different European museums are reported. The tribe Terpnistrini Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 is resurrected. The distribution of the following species is enhanced: Pardalotaasymmetrica Karsch, 1896, Diogenadenticulata Chopard, 1954, Diogenafausta (Burmeister, 1838), Plangiopsisadeps Karsch, 1896, Poreuomenasanghensis Massa, 2013 and Tylopsiscontinua (Walker, 1869). Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan kuntosaliharrastusta rituaalisena toimintana, joka rakentaa identiteettejä symbolisten rajojen kautta. Työssä etsitään myös vastausta siihen, minkälaisia identiteettejä kuntosaliharrastajille muodostuu kuntosalirituaalissa. Tutkielmassa selvitetään lisäksi kuntosaliharrastajien motivaatiota säännölliseen harjoitteluun. Kuntosaliharrastus on osa monien ihmisten elämää, mutta etnologista tutkimusta siitä on tehty vähän. Opinnäytetyö paikkaa tätä vajetta. Suomi on kiinnostava maa. Vain muutaman tunnin ajomatkan päässä voi löytää toisen todellisuuden, vaikka taivaankansi on sama. Kävin marraskuussa tutustumassa Vöyrissä toteutettuun ruotsinkieliseen turvapaikanhakijoille suunnattuun kotoutumiskoulutukseen, jota rahoittaa kolmen vuoden ajan Svenska kulturfonden. Olin rahoittajien pyynnöstä tapaamassa koulutuksen toteuttajia ja koulutukseen osallistujia. Mukanani oli poikani Pietu, joka käy 8. luokkaa Muuramessa. Hänelle ruotsi on yhtä tervanjuontia. Ei auta, että pikkuserkkuja asuu Göteborgissa tai että isomummi oli kaksikielinen. Ruotsin kielellä on hyvin ohut kosketus (oppikirjakin on säästynyt siistinä) hänen elämässään. Seuraavassa kerromm…
