Barriers to Sport Participation Faced by Ethiopian and Eritrean Migrant Women in Switzerland
2021
Global migration (both forced and voluntary) has intensified the interaction between existing and emerging cultures. Sport has gained recognition as an effective tool for enhancing migrants’ overall wellbeing, active participation, and social integration. However, a growing number of studies have shown that migrant women have the lowest rate of sport participation, especially in organized clubs. These findings have brought the accessibility and inclusion of existing sport structure and culture in host countries into question. Using the six-factor model of constraints by Tsai and Coleman (1999), this study explored the barriers that hinder Ethiopian and Eritrea migrant women (EEMW) from part…
Data Mining Algorithms for Knowledge Extraction
2020
In this paper, we study the methods, techniques, and algorithms used in data mining, and from the studied algorithms, we emphasized the clustering algorithms, more precisely on the K-means algorithm. This algorithm was first studied using the Euclidean distance, then modifying the distance between the clusters using the distances Mahalanobis and Canberra. After implementing the algorithms in C/C++, we compared the clustering of the three algorithms, after which we modified them and studied the distance between the clusters.
Euroopan keskuspankin rahapolitiikan arviointi Taylorin säännön avulla
2015

Witnessing the experience of European bordering : watching the documentary Under den samme himmel in an immigration detention centre
2019
This article draws on theories of bordering and mediated witnessing to examine a documentary film that mediates migrants’ experiences of bordering in Europe. My analysis of Under den samme himmel/Days of Hope shows how the film captures the multiplicity of bordering practices, from geographical to socio-cultural borderings. The analysis is informed by watching and discussing the film in an immigrant detention facility in Finland with people who experienced and eye-witnessed experiences similar to those depicted in the film. This creates a sense of co-presence of the experiential landscapes in the border zones, and the film invites viewers to consider borders not as lines in the landscape, b…
Explaining the Difference between Policy-Based Evidence and Evidence-Based Policy: A Nexus Analysis Approach to Mobilities and Migration
2019
Abstract In this policy analysis, we explain the difference between policy-based evidence (PBE) and evidence-based policy (EBP). We argue that better, evidence-based understanding, explanations, and questions can be sought by problematizing the challenging forms of twenty-first century migration and mobilities. We emphasize that this can be done by not confusing PBE with EBP, especially when each is needed as a basis for specific types of action. By focusing on topics often viewed as “unrelated” or confused with one another, we underline the social dynamics that are unfamiliar to many policy actors, professionals, and stakeholders, who rely on scholars for actionable analyses. Our mode of i…
PRINCIPAL POLYNOMIAL ANALYSIS
2014
© 2014 World Scientific Publishing Company. This paper presents a new framework for manifold learning based on a sequence of principal polynomials that capture the possibly nonlinear nature of the data. The proposed Principal Polynomial Analysis (PPA) generalizes PCA by modeling the directions of maximal variance by means of curves instead of straight lines. Contrarily to previous approaches PPA reduces to performing simple univariate regressions which makes it computationally feasible and robust. Moreover PPA shows a number of interesting analytical properties. First PPA is a volume preserving map which in turn guarantees the existence of the inverse. Second such an inverse can be obtained…
Age and sex-based differences in functional strength of adults participating in Special Olympics
2022
Muscular strength is a critical component of physical health. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine age- and sex-based differences in functional strength and rates of referral for education in a large international sample of Special Olympics athletes. A total of 30,358 (male = 19,661) adult (20–69 years old) athlete functional strength records were utilized from the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes database. Descriptive statistics were computed for the following tests: timed sit to stand, partial sit-up, grip strength, and seated push-up. Analyses of variance with Fisher-Hayter pairwise comparisons generally supported age-related decreases in strength among both males and fe…
A longitudinal test of the effects of Facebook use on cultural adaptation
2015
The present study is a longitudinal examination of the role of Facebook on the cultural adaptation of Muslim immigrants to the United States (n = 379). Immigrants’ use of Facebook affects interactions with the dominant culture and with the ingroup. Respondents were asked about their use of Facebook, motivation to culturally adapt, and perceptions of the US at two different points in a 6-year period. Analysis revealed the following. Muslim immigrants to the US from 2006 to 2012 who used Facebook more for social interaction with the ingroup were less likely to be motivated to culturally adapt to the US dominant culture and these same immigrants were more likely to have a negative perception o…
Koulukritiikkiin vastaaminen luovuuden ja elinikäisen oppimisen asenteen näkökulmista
2017
Tutkimukseni tehtävänä oli selvittää, miten eri alojen asiantuntijat elinikäisen oppimisen elämänkaarelta tukevat luovuutta ja innostusta heidän omissa työtehtävissään. Lisäksi tiedustelin haastateltavilta, millaisena he näkevät opettajuuden roolin nyt ja tulevaisuudessa. Haastattelututkimukseni lähestymisote oli fenomenografinen, joten tarkastelin tutkittavien käsityksiä. Haastattelin neljässä eri kaupungissa yhdeksää asiantuntijaa keväällä 2016. Heihin kuului opettajia, professoreita ja yritysjohtajia. Haastattelut suoritettiin suullisesti ja kirjallisesti sähköpostin välityksellä. Analysoin aineiston fenomenografisella analyysilla. Tutkimustulokset vahvistivat jo olemassa olevaa teoriaa …
