The participation paradox: demand for and fear of immigrant participation
2019
In this paper, we address the ambivalence in European immigrant integration discourses toward the political participation of immigrants. We show how this ambivalence manifests in what we call a ‘participation paradox’, which is constituted by two apparently conflicting, but potentially mutually reinforcing characteristics of the discourse. The first emphasizes the need for immigrants to be active in order to attain a well-integrated society and well-functioning democratic polity; the second is a call for the protection of liberal democratic institutions from the alleged ‘illiberal threats’ that migrants pose to society. Immigrant participation is thus both demanded and feared. Using illustr…

Allergy immunotherapy across the life cycle to promote active and healthy ageing: from research to policies: An AIRWAYS Integrated Care Pathways (ICP…
2016
Allergic diseases often occur early in life and persist throughout life. This life-course perspective should be considered in allergen immunotherapy. In particular it is essential to understand whether this al treatment may be used in old age adults. The current paper was developed by a working group of AIRWAYS integrated care pathways for airways diseases, the model of chronic respiratory diseases of the European Innovation Partnership on active and healthy ageing (DG CONNECT and DG Santé). It considered (1) the political background, (2) the rationale for allergen immunotherapy across the life cycle, (3) the unmet needs for the treatment, in particular in preschool children and old age adu…
Do Saharan Dust Days Carry a Risk of Hospitalization From Respiratory Diseases for Citizens of the Canary Islands (Spain)?
2021
Background: Saharan dust meets the Canary Islands at the beginning of its westward path across the North Atlantic, exceeding the European daily levels for PM10; for this reason, their two provincial capital cities, constitute optimal sites where to evaluate the health effects of this natural event. Objectives: To assess the short-term association between Saharan Dust Days (SDDs) and respiratory morbidity in the two capital cities. Methods: We carried out a time-series analysis with daily emergency hospital admissions due to all respiratory system diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma between 2001 and 2005, assessing the independent effect of SDDs, defined accordi…
Scaling up strategies of the chronic respiratory disease programme of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (Action Plan B…
2016
Action Plan B3 of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) focuses on the integrated care of chronic diseases. Area 5 (Care Pathways) was initiated using chronic respiratory diseases as a model. The chronic respiratory disease action plan includes (1) AIRWAYS integrated care pathways (ICPs), (2) the joint initiative between the Reference site MACVIA-LR (Contre les MAladies Chroniques pour un VIeillissement Actif) and ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma), (3) Commitments for Action to the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing and the AIRWAYS ICPs network. It is deployed in collaboration with the World Health Organizatio…
"Arjessa pitää aikalailla olla kaikki palikat itsellä tassuissa" : suomalaisten johtajien työn ja perheen yhteensovittaminen puolisoiden kokemana
2017
Emmi Telanne (2017). ”Arjessa pitää aikalailla olla kaikki palikat itsellä tassuissa” - Suomalaisten johtajien työn ja perheen yhteensovittaminen puolisoiden kokemana: Liikuntatieteellinen tiedekunta, Jyväskylän yliopisto, terveyskasvatuksen pro gradu -tutkielma, 52 s., 6 liitettä. Työn ja perheen yhteensovittaminen on tärkeää yksilön, yhteiskunnan, yritysten ja erityisesti perheen näkökulmasta. Tutkimusten mukaan johtajan työn stressi- ja vaatimustekijöillä on havaittu olevan kielteisiä vaikutuksia perhe-elämän hyvinvointiin. Etenkin ajankäyttö arjessa on osoittautunut ongelmaksi työn ja perhe-elämän yhdistämisessä. Työnteko vei suuren osan johtajan käytettävissä olevasta ajasta ja energia…

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF ATMOSPHERIC BULK DEPOSITION AT THE INDUSTRIAL AREA OF GELA (SICILY, ITALY)
2014
Bulk deposition has been collected at six sampling sites in area of Gela plain (Italy) in the period from February 2008 to May 2009. Samples collected each two weeks were analysed for the major ion and trace elements content. Preliminary results allow identifying three different sources that control the abundance of the elements in atmospheric deposition: (1) sea spray, (2)geogenic dust, and (3) anthropogenic pollution. Due to the closeness of the coast, clear evidence of sea spray input is detectable for most of the samples. The high excess of non sea-salt sulphate(50 - 90% of the total) is prevailingly ascribable to the abundant SO2 emissions of the refinery. The pH values of the collected…
Filtration of Nordic recirculating aquaculture system wastewater : Effects on microalgal growth, nutrient removal, and nutritional value
2021
Microalgal bioremediation of recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) wastewater represents an alternative for wastewater treatment with the potential to generate valuable biomass. This study evaluated the effects of removing biological contamination and suspended solids from Nordic area RAS wastewater through filtration with 0.45 μm filters on the performance and nutritional value of microalgae. All three tested green microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis, Monoraphidium griffithii, and Selenastrum sp.) were able to grow in raw (unfiltered) and filtered RAS wastewater. Cultivation in raw RAS wastewater decreased the ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acid content of H. pluvialis as compared to filtered wastewat…
SAHA/TRAIL combination induces detachment and anoikis of MDA-MB231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells
2012
Abstract SAHA, an inhibitor of histone deacetylase activity, has been shown to sensitize tumor cells to apoptosis induced by TRAIL, a member of TNF-family. In this paper we investigated the effect of SAHA/TRAIL combination in two breast cancer cell lines, the ERα−positive MCF-7 and the ERα−negative MDA-MB231. Treatment of MDA-MB231 and MCF-7 cells with SAHA in combination with TRAIL caused detachment of cells followed by anoikis, a form of apoptosis which occurs after cell detachment, while treatment with SAHA or TRAIL alone did not produce these effects. The effects were more evident in MDA-MB231 cells, which were chosen for ascertaining the mechanism of SAHA/TRAIL action. Our results show…
