Aging and microRNA messaging : associations with systemic estrogen levels and physical performance
2018
This thesis took an innovative approach, which involved methodological development, to investigate microRNAs as candidate molecules and as genome-wide regulators of age, menopausal status and physical condition in both sexes. The focus was on potential serum microRNAs indicative of age, pre- or postmenopausal status, with or without estrogen- based hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and long-term physical training. MicroRNA associations with adiposity and inflammatory markers were also analyzed. Three different study designs were used: 1) the SAWEs study comprised healthy postmenopausal monozygotic twin sisters (n=11, 54-62 years) with discordance for HRT and premenopausal women (n=30, 20-4…
Estrogeenitason vaikutus lihasaktivaation jälkeiseen voimantuoton potentoitumiseen
2017
Ikääntymisen myötä luustolihaksen toiminta muuttuu ja lihasmassa vähenee. Ikääntymisen vaikutukset eroavat naisten ja miesten välillä. Estrogeenituotannon vähenemistä pidetään eräänä osatekijänä naisten suorituskyvyn laskun kiihtymiselle, joka ajoittuu vaihdevuosien yhteyteen. Vaikka estrogeenin vaikutusmekanismia lihasten toiminnassa ei tunnetakaan kovin hyvin, on viitteitä, että estrogeenin vaikutus kohdistuu myosiinimolekyylin fosforylaatioon. Myosiinifosforylaatiolla on merkittävä rooli lihasaktivaation jälkeisessä voimantuoton potentoitumisessa (PAP). PAP:lla tarkoitetaan ilmiötä, jossa lihaksen aiempi supistus vaikuttaa lihaksen voimantuottoon. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selv…
Eettinen organisaatiokulttuuri : yhteydet työhyvinvointiin ja työpaikan vaihtoihin
2015
The research investigated the associations between ethical organizational cul ture, ethical strain (stress caused by ethical dilemmas) and job turnover. The first study investigated differences in employees’ ethical strain and their evalua tions of the ethical culture of their organizations between a public sector city organization (n = 3,123), an engineering firm (n = 287) and a bank (n = 187). In the second study, the connections between resources and personal authority for ethical actions (one dimension of the ethical culture of an organization) and eth ical strain in social affairs and health services in a public sector city organization were analyzed at the work-unit (n = 142) level as…

From language alternation to global multilingual repertoires in Finnish youth radio programs in Finland and Sweden
2014
This PhD study explores multilingualism in Finnish language youth radio broadcasting, with interactional and ethnographic data from Sweden Finnish and Finnish youth radio broadcasting. The interactional data consist of audio recordings from radio programs, while the ethnographic data consist of observations, logbook notes and interviews. The data were recorded and collected during the summer of 2005 from Radio Sweden’s (SR) Finnish language radio station Sisuradio and its youth program Klubi-Klubben, and simultaneously from Finnish YleX, from its X-Ryhmä and YleX Tänään programs. Multilingualism within radio broadcasting is investigated from a qualitative and sociolinguistic viewpoint. The …

Gut Microbiota and Serum Metabolome in Elite Cross-Country Skiers : A Controlled Study
2022
Exercise has been shown to affect gut the microbiome and metabolic health, with athletes typically displaying a higher microbial diversity. However, research on the gut microbiota and systemic metabolism in elite athletes remains scarce. In this study, we compared the gut microbiota profiles and serum metabolome of national team cross-country skiers at the end of an exhausting training and competitive season to those of normally physically-active controls. The gut microbiota were analyzed using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Serum metabolites were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance. Phylogenetic diversity and the abundance of several mucin-degrading gut microbial taxa, including Akker…
Early adulthood and current physical activity and their association with symptoms of pelvic floor disorders in middle-aged women : an observational s…
2023
Objective To investigate associations of early and middle adulthood physical activity (PA) with symptoms of pelvic floor disorders (PFD), i.e., stress urinary incontinence (SUI), urge urinary incontinence (UUI), fecal incontinence (FI), constipation or defecation difficulties (CDD), and feeling of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) among middle-aged women. Design A cross-sectional, observational study with retrospective PA assessment. Setting University Research Laboratory. Sample A random population sample of 1098 47-to-55-year-old Finnish women. Methods Early adulthood PA, current PA, and demographical and gynaecological variables were assessed using self-report questionnaires. Logistic regressi…
