Highlights • The passive samplers collected bioavail able and bioaccessible chemicals from the WWTP sludge samples. • The sampler extracts were acutely and chronically toxic to water flea. • The sampler extracts were cytotoxic and genotoxic. • The sludge treatment such as composting and digesting diminished the toxicity. • Effect-based methods should be part of the risk assessment of sludge recycling. Sewage sludge is an inevitable byproduct produced in wastewater treatment. Vaihto-opiskelijat tulevat Suomeen opiskelemaan usein sen takia että suomalaiset osaavat niin hyvin englantia. Suomalaisiin tutustuminen koetaan kuitenkin erittäin haastavaksi. Yhteyksien puuttuminen vaihto-opiskelijoiden ja suomalaisten välillä onkin yksi suurimmista epäkohdista Suomessa opiskelemisessa. Miten englanninkielisen opintotarjonnan perässä tulevat vaihto-opiskelijat saataisiin lähemmäksi suomalaista kulttuuria ja yhteiskuntaa? Yksi ratkaisu löytyy kielikursseista. Euroopan unionin Erasmus-ohjelman puitteissa onkin tarjottu Suomeen saapuville vaihto-opiskelijoille kielikursseja jo vuodesta 1996, ja näistä on saatu erinomaisia kokemuksia. nonPeerReviewed

The aim of this paper is to analyze the content of a questionnaire that is used in order to conduct a Finnish Family Firms’ Association’s annual barometer for its members. The content of the questionnaire is reflected to a relevant theory and compared with two other fairly similar questionnaires. Prevalence of genetically similar Flavobacterium columnare phages across aquaculture environments reveals a strong potential for pathogen control

Intensive aquaculture conditions expose fish to bacterial infections, leading to significant financial losses, extensive antibiotic use and risk of antibiotic resistance in target bacteria. Flavobacterium columnare causes columnaris disease in aquaculture worldwide. To develop a bacteriophage-based control of columnaris disease, we isolated and characterized 126 F. columnare strains and 63 phages against F. columnare from Finland and Sweden in 2017. We report a complete genome sequence of a Finnish isolate of the fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare. Using PacBio RS II sequencing technology, the complete circular genome of F. columnare strain B185 with 3,261,404 bp was obtained.
The Role of a Supportive Interpersonal Environment and Education-Related Goal Motivation During the Transition Beyond Upper Secondary Education

This longitudinal study investigated the role of parents and peers as well as of education-related goal motivation during educational transitioning in late adolescence. The sample consisted of 1520 upper secondary education students attending either academic or vocational upper secondary school in Finland. They were surveyed three times: (1) in the first year of their upper secondary education, (2) in the second year of their upper secondary education, and (3) two years later.
