The effect of alertness and attention on the modulation of the beta rhythm to tactile stimulation

Abstract Beta rhythm modulation has been used as a biomarker to reflect the functional state of the sensorimotor cortex in both healthy subjects and patients. Here, the effect of reduced alertness and active attention to the stimulus on beta rhythm modulation was investigated. Beta rhythm modulation to tactile stimulation of the index finger was recorded simultaneously with MEG and EEG in 23 healthy subjects (mean 23, range 19–35 years). Tutkielma selvittää sitä, kuinka 8 – luokkalaiset osaavat ruotsin kielen monikkomuotoja lukuvuoden puolessa välissä ja minkälaisia oppimisstrategioita he käyttävät oikean monikkomuodon löytämiseksi. Myös käytetyn oppikirjan monikkojen esittämistä ja oppilaiden mahdollista deklaratiivista tietoa monikoista on analysoitu. Oppilaiden omia toiveita opetuksesta ja mielipiteitä oppikirjan monikoiden opetuksesta kuvataan. Monikkomuodot osataan paremmin epämääräisessä muodossa ja subjektina kuin määräisessä tai objektina. Musical training predicts cerebello-hippocampal coupling during music listening.

Cerebello-hippocampal interactions occur during accurate spatiotemporal prediction of movements. In the context of music listening, differences in cerebello-hippocampal functional connectivity may result from differences in predictive listening accuracy. Using functional MRI, we studied differences in this network between 18 musicians and 18 nonmusicians while they listened to music. Musicians possess a predictive listening advantage over nonmusicians, facilitated by strengthened coupling between produced and heard sounds through lifelong musical experience. Emissions from metal mining activities are known to deteriorate the quality of aquatic habitats and impair the condition and reproductive potential of fish. Metal extraction by biomining methods has been considered to cause fewer emissions, but for example in Finland, the impacts of a bioheapleaching technology utilizing metal mine on the local freshwaters have been substantial. In this thesis, the impacts of the bioheapleaching mine emissions on three native fish species, brown trout (Salmo trutta) European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus pallasi), were investigated. Sari Luostarinen tutki väitöstyössään hajautettua anaerobista jätevesien käsittelyä alhaisissa lämpötiloissa (10-20 °C). Anaerobinen käsittely mahdollistaa sekä jätemateriaalin stabiloinnin, uusiutuvan energian tuotannon metaanina ja/tai vetynä että arvokkaiden yhdisteiden, kuten ravinteiden, uudelleenkäytön. Luostarisen mukaan käsittely voidaan toteuttaa hajautettuna kiinteistö- tai kyläkohtaisissa prosesseissa.
