Habitat selection by riverine grayling, Thymallus thymallus L

2004

New perspectives in medical approach to therapy of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

2009

Head and neck cancer is the eighth most common cause of cancer death worldwide. Its incidence varies widely among different regions. In North America and the European Union, head and neck cancer accounts for 3% to 4% of all cancer diagnoses. Conversely, in Southeast Asia and Africa, head and neck cancer accounts for approximately 8% to 10% of all cancers1. Although the incidence of head and neck cancers has decreased slightly from 1975 to 2002 in the United States5, approximately 46 000 new cases are still expected in 2007 alone. Even if surgery and radiotherapy have remained the core therapy in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC). Radiotherapy following surgery was the sta…

Five insights from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

2020

The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 provides a rules-based synthesis of the available evidence on levels and trends in health outcomes, a diverse set of risk factors, and health system responses. GBD 2019 covered 204 countries and territories, as well as first administrative level disaggregations for 22 countries, from 1990 to 2019. Because GBD is highly standardised and comprehensive, spanning both fatal and non-fatal outcomes, and uses a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of hierarchical disease and injury causes, the study provides a powerful basis for detailed and broad insights on global health trends and emerging challenges. GBD …

Communication accommodation between healthcare providers at a private hospital in England : how does identity talk?

2015

A healthcare environment consists of a number of people who perform different roles, and at differing levels of seniority on the workplace hierarchy. How these people communicate with each other is based on many individual factors, including language, culture, ethnicity, and in what way they perceive their own and others’ seniority. These factors can complicate communication, and lead to communication that is ineffective and/or failed. This thesis used the Communication Accommodation Theory to explain how verbal communication between healthcare providers is achieved, and Social Identity Theory to explain why communication is achieved in a particular way. Through analysis of one-on-one inter…

Sporadic oral angiomyolipoma: Case report

2007

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare, benign tumour composed of a variable proportion of lipocytes, smooth muscle and thick-walled blood vessels. AML is part of a family of tumours arising from perivascular epithelioid cells (PEComas), and many cases are associated with tuberous sclerosis, with the kidney being the most frequent site involved. We report a case of sporadic AML in the hard palate of a 52-year-old male, an extremely unusual location for this tumour. Differentiation from other benign and malignant oral mesenchymal lesions depends on recognition of the three histologic components, and immunohistochemical techniques may be helpful. AML occurring in the head and neck do not express HMB-…

Evaluation of Dysphagia and Inhalation Risk in Neurologically Impaired Children Using Esophageal High-Resolution Manometry with Swallowing Analysis

2022

Background: Dysphagia in neurologically impaired children is associated with feeding difficulties, malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia. Esophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) has been used in the diagnosis of motility disorders affecting the swallowing process. The aim of this study was to analyze swallowing functions in NI children by using HRM in order to establish swallow parameters identifying inhalation risk. Methods: Twenty-five NI children with cerebral palsy were submitted to esophageal HRM with UES analysis, comparing the results with non-NI children. The following parameters were evaluated: maximum pressure and duration of contraction of the velopharynx (VP) and tongue base …

The effects of dietary fumonisin B1 on growth and physiology of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

2016
