Fluence rate or cumulative dose? : Vulnerability of larval northern pike (Esox lucius) to ultraviolet radiation

2007

Newly hatched larvae of northern pike were exposed in the laboratory to four fluence rates of ultraviolet radiation (UVR; 290–400 nm) over three different time periods, resulting in total doses ranging from 3.0 ± 0.2 to 63.0 ± 4.4 kJ·m−2. Mortality and behavior of the larvae were followed for 8–12 days, and growth measured at the end of the experiment. Also, the principle of reciprocity—that the UVR-induced mortality depends on the cumulative dose, independent of fluence rate—was tested. Fluence rates higher than 1480 ± 150 mW·m−2 caused mortality and growth retardation. The highest fluence rate (3040 ± 210 mW·m−2) caused 100% mortality in 5 days. All fluence rates caused behavioral disorde…

Does better education mitigate risky health behavior? A mendelian randomization study.

2022

Education and risky health behaviors are strongly negatively correlated. Education may affect health behaviors by enabling healthier choices through higher disposable income, increasing information about the harmful effects of risky health behaviors, or altering time preferences. Alternatively, the observed negative correlation may stem from reverse causality or unobserved confounders. Based on the data from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study linked to register-based information on educational attainment and family background, this paper identifies the causal effect of education on risky health behaviors. To examine causal effects, we used a genetic score as an instrument for year…

Selective chiral inhibition of Ca2+ entry promoted by bisbenzyltetrahydroisoquinolines in rat uterus.

1992

Abstract The effects of diltiazem and six bisbenzyltetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids (antioquine, 7-O-methylantioquine, dimethylantioquine, monterine, granjine and cordobimine) were studied in rat isolated uterus in order to clarify the mechanisms of their relaxant actions. All the compounds tested completely relaxed KCl-induced contractions and totally or partially inhibited oxytocin-induced rhythmic contractions. Only alkaloids with absolute configurations (1R,1′S or 1R,1′R) acted intracellularly, promoting relaxation of contractile responses induced by oxytocin in a Ca2+-free medium, as does papaverine. Alkaloids of the antioquine series (1S,1′R) selectively inhibited Ca2+ entry. The grea…

Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase gene expression in retina and pineal gland of rats under various photoperiods

2004

Abstract The present study examines how the circadian oscillators in the retina and the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) respond to changes in photoperiod. ArylalkylamineN-acetyltransferase (aa-nat) gene expression studied by quantitative RT-PCR revealed that in adult Sprague–Dawley rats kept under different light–dark (LD) cycles for two weeks the temporal pattern of AA-NAT mRNA expression was identical in retina and pineal gland. In both tissues, the time span between the onset of darkness and the nocturnal rise in AA-NAT mRNA expression was 3 h under LD 20:4, 6 h under LD 12:12, and 15 h under LD 4:20. As aa-nat expression in the pineal gland is regulated by the circadian oscillator in SCN,…

Inhibition of TSH/IGF-1 Receptor Crosstalk by Teprotumumab as a Treatment Modality of Thyroid Eye Disease

2021

Abstract Context We previously presented evidence that TSH receptor (TSHR)-stimulating autoantibodies (TSAbs) bind to and activate TSHRs but do not bind to IGF1 receptors (IGF1Rs). Nevertheless, we showed that IGF1Rs were involved in thyroid eye disease (TED) pathogenesis because TSAbs activated crosstalk between TSHR and IGF1R. Teprotumumab, originally generated to inhibit IGF1 binding to IGF1R, was recently approved for the treatment of TED (Tepezza). Objective To investigate the role of TSHR/IGF1R crosstalk in teprotumumab treatment of TED. Design We used orbital fibroblasts from patients with TED (TEDOFs) and measured stimulated hyaluronan (HA) secretion as a measure of orbital fibrobla…
