Data from: Temporal structure of human gaze dynamics is invariant during free viewing
2016
We investigate the dynamic structure of human gaze and present an experimental study of the frequency components of the change in gaze position over time during free viewing of computer-generated fractal images. We show that changes in gaze position are scale-invariant in time with statistical properties that are characteristic of a random walk process. We quantify and track changes in the temporal structure using a well-defined scaling parameter called the Hurst exponent, H. We find H is robust regardless of the spatial complexity generated by the fractal images. In addition, we find the Hurst exponent is invariant across all participants, including those with distinct changes to higher or…
Some observations on the spectrophotometric determination of nitrite using ergonovine-p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde
1991
Abstract The system ergonovine maleate-p-diethylaminobenzaldehyde in sulfuric acid media is applied to the kinetic-spectrophotometric determination of nitrite ions with competitive precision. The reaction rate is strongly enhanced by the presence of nitrite or ferric ions, being the nitrite in the “promoting” role of the reaction. Linear calibration plots are obtained for nitrite concentration ranges 0.3–2.4 ppm or 0.66–6 ppb. The influence of foreign compounds is also established.
An automatic method for metabolic evaluation of gamma knife treatments
2015
Lesion volume delineation of Positron Emission Tomography images is challenging because of the low spatial resolution and high noise level. Aim of this work is the development of an operator independent segmentation method of metabolic images. For this purpose, an algorithm for the biological tumor volume delineation based on random walks on graphs has been used. Twenty-four cerebral tumors are segmented to evaluate the functional follow-up after Gamma Knife radiotherapy treatment. Experimental results show that the segmentation algorithm is accurate and has real-time performance. In addition, it can reflect metabolic changes useful to evaluate radiotherapy response in treated patients.

Ankle plantar flexor muscles are active in the stance phase of walking to propel the body forward. Increasing walking speed requires increased plantar flexor excitation, frequently assessed using surface electromyography (EMG). Despite its popularity, validity of surface EMG applied on shank muscles is mostly unclear. Thus, we examined the agreement between surface and intramuscular EMG at a range of walking speeds. Ten participants walked overground at slow, preferred, fast, and maximum walking speeds (1.01 ± 0.13, 1.43 ± 0.19, 1.84 ± 0.23, and 2.20 ± 0.38 m s-1, respectively) while surface and fine-wire EMG activities of flexor hallucis longus (FHL), soleus (SOL), medial gastrocnemius (MG…
Metástasis óseas secundarias a carcinoma renal diagnosticadas mediante gammagrafía ósea
2001
We reported the case of a 35-y-old man with renal cell carcinoma and cold lesions detected by bone scintigraphy, related to metastatic involvement. Conventional X-Ray did not show any pathological findings, being confirmed by axial computed tomography (CT) the scintigraphic bone lesions. We have accomplished a discussion of the role of bone scintigraphy and complementary techniques (radiography, alkaline phosphatase levels) in the diagnosis of bone metastases in renal cell carcinoma.
Synthesis, computational evaluation and pharmacological assessment of acetylsalicylic esters as anti-inflammatory agents
2019
A convenient approach to the synthesis of alkyl esters of aspirin (ASA-OR) has been developed. The synthesis of ASA-OR has been realized in two steps: (1) direct esterification of salicylic acid with alcohols in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide to give alkyl salicylates (SAL-OR); (2) acetylation of SAL-OR with acetyl chloride to yield ASA-OR. Molecular mechanics simulations, performed to calculate the kinetic radii of several ASA-OR, indicated that the pentyl and hexyl acetylsalicylates possess the best properties to cross cell membranes. The in vitro biological tests demonstrate their anti-inflammatory activity, superimposable to that of aspirin. The results of our study suggest th…
Repurposing of the ALK inhibitor crizotinib for acute leukemia and multiple myeloma cells
2021
Crizotinib was a first generation of ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor approved for the treatment of ALK-positive non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) patients. COMPARE and cluster analyses of transcriptomic data of the NCI cell line panel indicated that genes with different cellular functions regulated the sensitivity or resistance of cancer cells to crizotinib. Transcription factor binding motif analyses in gene promoters divulged two transcription factors possibly regulating the expression of these genes, i.e., RXRA and GATA1, which are important for leukemia and erythroid development, respectively. COMPARE analyses also implied that cell lines of various cancer types displayed varying degr…
Synthesis of fluorine-18 labeled sulfonureas as ?-cell imaging agents
2001
Tolbutamide (1) and glyburide (7) are hypoglycemic drugs used to stimulate insulin secretion in type 2 diabetic patients. We have synthesized their fluorine-18 labeled analogs, 1-[(4-[ 18 F]fluorobenzenesulfonyl)]-3-butyl]urea (p-[ 18 F]fluorotolbutamide, 3a) and N-{4-[β-(2-[ 18 F]fluoroethoxybenzene carboxamido)ethyl]benzenesulfonyl)-N'-cyclohexylurea (2-[ 18 F]fluoroethoxyglyburide, 6a) as β-cell imaging agents. Compound 3a was synthesized via two approaches: One-step synthesis via nucleophilic substitution of p-nitrotolbutamide (2) with K[ 18 F]/Kryptofix 2.2.2 in either CH 3 CN or DMSO gave a complicated mixture; a two-step synthesis via preparation and reaction of 4-[ 18 F]fluorobenzen…
Association Between Gait Speed With Mortality, Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer:A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies
2018
Objectives: Slow gait speed may be associated with premature mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer, although a comprehensive meta-analysis is lacking. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we explored potential associations between gait speed and mortality, incident CVD, and cancer. Design: A systematic search in major databases was undertaken from inception until March 15, 2018 for prospective cohort studies reporting data on gait speed and mortality, incident CVD, and cancer. Setting and Participants: All available. Measures: The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), based on the model with the maximum number of covariates for each study bet…
