Amygdaloidal basalts: Isotopic and petrographic evidence for non-diagenetic crustal source of carbonate inclusions

1980

Even though carbonate amygdules in volcanics are generally assumed to be diagenetic in origin, the authors are of the opinion that almost all carbonate inclusions in the investigated amygdaloidal volcanic rocks from Sicily (Italy), Pindos (Greece) and Bohemia (Czechoslovakia), have a different origin. On the basis of a mineralogical, petrological and geochemical study these “amygdules” are interpreted as being remains ofmagmatic incorporation of carbonate. Therefore, the identification of carbonate globules in volcanics purely on field observations, is inadequate to distinguish true amygdules from carbonate assimilation remnants. A nomenclature of the various types of inclusions is proposed…

Micro-investment perspective and the potential of the universal basic income

2018

In this article, we explore the prospects of Basic Income (BI) as a development policy tool. Our approach is to analyse the BI as a tool for promoting micro-investments and as a general development policy instrument, thus deliberately departing from the perception of cash transfers as targeted poverty reduction tools. As experiences in testing BI systems in developing country contexts are limited to local and regional experiments in Namibia and India (Haarmann et al., 2009; Haarmann & Haarmann, 2012; Davala et al., 2015), conclusive assessments about the impacts of the BI cannot be drawn. Therefore, we aim to estimate potential impacts of the BI by synthesising existing knowledge. This esti…

1-Benzyloxy-1H-benzotriazole

2012

In the title compound, C13H11N3O, the dihedral angle between the benzotriazole ring system [maximum deviation = 0.027 (16) Å] and the benzene ring is 10.28 (9)°. The C—C—O—N bond adopts an anti conformation [torsion angle = −177.11 (16)°]. In the crystal, the molecules interact via weak C—H...π interactions and aromatic π–π stacking [centroid-to-centroid distance = 3.731 (12) Å].

Kinetics of the Strain-Promoted Oxidation-Controlled Cycloalkyne-1,2-quinone Cycloaddition: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

2018

Stimulated by its success in both bioconjugation and surface modification, we studied the strain-promoted oxidation-controlled cycloalkyne–1,2-quinone cycloaddition (SPOCQ) in three ways. First, the second-order rate constants and activation parameters (ΔH⧧) were determined of various cyclooctynes reacting with 4-tert-butyl-1,2-quinone in a SPOCQ reaction, yielding values for ΔH⧧ of 4.5, 7.3, and 12.1 kcal/mol, for bicyclo[6.1.0]non-4-yne (BCN), cyclooctyne (OCT), and dibenzoazacyclooctyne (DIBAC), respectively. Second, their reaction paths were investigated in detail by a range of quantum mechanical calculations. Single-configuration theoretical methods, like various DFT and a range of MP2…

Synthesis and Redox Behaviour of the Chalcogenocarbonyl Dianions, [(E)C(PPh2S)2]2−: Formation and Structures of Chalcogen−Chalcogen Bonded Dimers and…

2010

The lithium salts of the chalcogenocarbonyl dianions [(E)C(PPh(2)S)(2)](2-) (E=S (4 b), Se (4 c)) were produced through the reactions between Li(2)[C(PPh(2)S)(2)] and elemental chalcogens in the presence of tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA). The solid-state structure of {[Li(TMEDA)](2)[(Se)C(PPh(2)S)(2)]}-[{Li(TMEDA)}(2)4 c]-was shown to be bicyclic with the Li(+) cations bis-S,Se-chelated by the dianionic ligand. One-electron oxidation of the dianions 4 b and 4 c with iodine afforded the diamagnetic complexes {[Li(TMEDA)](2)[(SPh(2)P)(2)CEEC(PPh(2)S)(2)]} ([Li(TMEDA)](2)7 b (E=S), [Li(TMEDA)](2)7 c (E=Se)), which are formally dimers of the radical anions [(E)C(PPh(2)S)(2)](-) (.) Understanding the mechanism of stereoselective synthesis of cyclopentenes via N-heterocyclic carbene catalyzed reactions of enals with enones.

2010

The N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed addition of enals to enones to yield trans-cyclopentenes has been investigated using DFT methods at B3LYP/6-31G** computational level. This NHC catalyzed reaction comprises several steps. The first one is the formation of a Breslow intermediate, which nucleophilically attacks to the conjugated position of the enone to yield an enol-enolate. This second step is responsible for the trans relationship at the final cyclopentene. An intramolecular aldolic condensation allows for the formation of the alkoxy cyclopentane intermediate, that by intramolecular nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl group yields a bicyclic ether. The extrusion of the NHC catalys…

Structural difficulty in grammatical evolution versus genetic programming

2013

Genetic programming (GP) has problems with structural difficulty as it is unable to search effectively for solutions requiring very full or very narrow trees. As a result of structural difficulty, GP has a bias towards narrow trees which means it searches effectively for solutions requiring narrow trees. This paper focuses on the structural difficulty of grammatical evolution (GE). In contrast to GP, GE works on variable-length binary strings and uses a grammar in Backus-Naur Form (BNF) to map linear genotypes to phenotype trees. The paper studies whether and how GE is affected by structural difficulty. For the analysis, we perform random walks through the search space and compare the struc…

On the Locality of Standard Search Operators in Grammatical Evolution

2014

Offspring should be similar to their parents and inherit their relevant properties. This general design principle of search operators in evolutionary algorithms is either known as locality or geometry of search operators, respectively. It takes a geometric perspective on search operators and suggests that the distance between an offspring and its parents should be less than or equal to the distance between both parents. This paper examines the locality of standard search operators used in grammatical evolution (GE) and genetic programming (GP) for binary tree problems. Both standard GE and GP search operators suffer from low locality since a substantial number of search steps result in an o…

Inhibition of liver trans-sulphuration pathway by propargylglycine mimics gene expression changes found in the mammary gland of weaned lactating rats…

2003

In the lactatingmammary gland, weaning produces mitochondrial cytochrome c release and nuclear DNA fragmentation, as determined by gel electrophoresis. This is followed by a significant decrease in lactation. Weaning for 2 h produces an early induction of the tumour suppressor/transcription factor p53, whereas the oncoprotein c-Jun and c-Jun N-terminal kinase are elevated after 24 h of weaning when compared with controls. The expression of p21cip1 and p27kip1, cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, was significantly higher in weaned rats when compared with control lactating rats. All the changes mentioned above also happen in the lactatingmammary gland when propargylglycine, an inhibitor of th…
