Seeing reality through Einstein's eyes: a teaching proposal for special relativity

2021

The teaching of Special Relativity is still a critical issue not only for students but also for teachers. In this paper, we describe the trial of a learning unit on the Special Relativity topic based on Minkowski's approach through spacetime diagrams, following the results in pedagogical researches in this field. The main innovation of our project consists of a mechanical instrument: it allows to physically and mechanically represent Lorentz’s transformations by hands, exploring the effects of a change of the reference frame. Teachers and students can deal “by eye” with unusual phenomena as the loss of simultaneity, time dilation, length contraction, relativistic addition of velocities and …

Quantum Real - Time Turing Machine

2001

The principles of quantum computation differ from the principles of classical computation very much. Quantum analogues to the basic constructions of the classical computation theory, such as Turing machine or finite 1-way and 2-ways automata, do not generalize deterministic ones. Their capabilities are incomparable. The aim of this paper is to introduce a quantum counterpart for real - time Turing machine. The recognition of a special kind of language, that can't be recognized by a deterministic real - time Turing machine, is shown.

Space-Efficient 1.5-Way Quantum Turing Machine

2001

1.5QTM is a sort of QTM (Quantum Turing Machine) where the head cannot move left (it can stay where it is and move right). For computations is used other - work tape. In this paper will be studied possibilities to economize work tape space more than the same deterministic Turing Machine can do (for some of the languages). As an example language (0i1i|i ≥ 0) is chosen, and is proved that this language could be recognized by deterministic Turing machine using log(i) cells on work tape , and 1.5QTM can recognize it using constant cells quantity.

Oxidative DNA damage and disturbance of antioxidant capacity by alternariol in Caco-2 cells

2015

Oxidative stress occurs as a consequence of an imbalance between the prooxidant/antioxidant systems, causing an increase of intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species. Alternariol (AOH), a mycotoxin produced by Alternaria sp. can alter the action of glutathione (GSH) and the enzymes involved in the redox system, causing damage to cellular macromolecules such as DNA. The aims of this work were to determine the induction of oxidative stress by the antioxidant defenses imbalance in relation to glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) levels and DNA damage in Caco-2 cells derived from adenocarcinoma human colon. Prunella vulgaris L. Upregulates eNOS Expression in Human Endothelial Cells

2010

The purported effects of "circulation-improving" herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) show striking similarities with the vascular actions of nitric oxide (NO) produced by the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS). We have previously reported that Salviae miltiorrhizae radix and Zizyphi spinosae semen upregulate eNOS expression. In the present study, we studied the effect on eNOS gene expression of 15 Chinese herbs with potential effects on the vasculature, and identified Prunella vulgaris L. (PVL) (flowering spike) as a potent eNOS-upregulating agent. In EA.hy 926 cells, a cell line derived from human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), an aqueous extract of PVL increased eNOS …

Determination of Fungi and Multi-Class Mycotoxins in Camelia sinensis and Herbal Teas and Dietary Exposure Assessment

2020

In this paper, a study of fungal and multi-mycotoxin contamination in 140 Camellia sinensis and 26 herbal teas marketed in Latvia is discussed. The analysis was performed using two-dimensional liquid chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (2D-LC-TOF-MS) and MALDI-TOF-MS. In total, 87% of the tea samples tested positive for 32 fungal species belonging to 17 genera, with the total enumeration of moulds ranging between 1.00 &times

Research focusing on plant performance in constructed wetlands and agronomic application of treated wastewater – A set of experimental studies in Sic…

2019

Constructed wetlands are sustainable technologies for the treatment of wastewater. These biological systems have been widely studied throughout the world for more than 30 years; however, most studies have focused on the effects of design and engineering on pollutant removal from wastewater. Undoubtedly, agro-technical aspects have been given too little consideration by research. This paper reports the main results of a set of experiments carried out on two pilot horizontal subsurface flow systems in Sicily (Italy). Festuca, Lolium and Pennisetum spp. in combination and three emergent macrophytes-Arundo donax L., Cyperus alternifolius L. and Typha latifolia L.-alone, were assessed. The aim o…

Limitations of Cross-Cultural Customer Satisfaction Research and Recommending Alternative Methods

2004

SUMMARY Cross-cultural research in tourism is receiving increasing attention from academics. Little, however, has been done with regard to the assessment of cultural differences in tourist satisfaction. Research in tourism marketing has recognized the need for further research in cross-cultural satisfaction research, and specifically, in equivalence issues regarding the measurement of tourist satisfaction. Consequently, the aim of this conceptual paper is to focus attention on the importance of exploring cross-cultural differences in customer satisfaction research. The principal contributions are three-fold: (1) to emphasize the significance of exploring cross-cultural differences while att…

Transaction Costs and Returns to a Trading Strategy

2017

This chapter starts with a review of transaction costs in capital markets. Then it demonstrates how to simulate the returns to a moving average trading strategy in the presence of transaction costs. The following two cases are considered when a trading indicator generates a sell signal: case one where the trader switches to cash, and case two where the trader alternatively sells short a financial asset.
