The medicine use and corresponding subjective health complaints among adolescents, a cross-national survey

2011

BACKGROUND: Medicine use among children and young people is under-researched. Studies that investigated cross-national patterns in adolescents' medicine use practice are rare. This study aims to investigate adolescents' medicine use for corresponding health complaints in Europe and USA. METHODS: Nationally representative samples of adolescents from 19 countries and regions in Europe and USA completed an anonymous, standardised questionnaire as part of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children 2005/2006 survey. The prevalence of health complaints and medicine use were determined. The influence of the frequency of medicine use, age, gender and country of residence, on the likelihood of med…

The Infanticide: Some Forensic and Ethical Issues

2013

Forensic investigation and clinical treatment of infanticide mother is occasion to reflect about this crime, related to social stigma. The forensic-psychiatric assessment must be anchored on authentic and meaningful clinical relationship to criminal mother, without misinterpretation and controtransferal dynamics, such as emotional reactions of mistrust and stigmatization toward the offender, which prevent the evaluator from a correct psychological and psychopathological comprehension. Otherwise, diachronic, multidisciplinary diagnostic evaluation may lead to strategies for treatment and rehabilitation, which can bring the patient to regain his dignity, his working capacities and social role…

Clinical trials in children.

2006

Abstract Randomized controlled clinical trials are felt by the medical community to provide the best evidence. Participation in trials involves the possibility of obtaining benefits but also of suffering some risks. Those risks are often considered unacceptable for children but if clinical trials are not conducted in children, clinicians are forced to extrapolate study data from adults. In 1968 H. Shirkey termed children "therapeutic orphans" because of the lack of adequately tested and labeled drugs available in appropriate formulations. Research involving children entails specific difficulties as the need to study children of different ages, the small number of children affected by certai…

Effectiveness of dentist's intervention in smoking cessation: a review

2016

Introduction: Smoking is one of the main public health problems in developed countries. Despite extensive evidence on the effects of smoking on both oral and general health, the rate of smoking cessation is not promising. Material and Methods: To review the evidence on knowledge and programs for smoking cessation developed by dentists, a literature review was carried out on programs for smoking cessation from the dentist’s perspective, as well as a review of behavioral guidelines that have been recently proposed for these interventions. We used the keywords “Tobacco”, “Smoking Prevention”, “Public Health” AND “Dentistry”, to identify controlled studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses …

The use of low level laser therapy in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders: review of the literature

2013

Introduction: The temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have been identified as the most important cause of pain in the facial region. The low level laser therapy (LLLT) has demonstrated to have an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and biostimulating effects. The LLLT is a noninvasive, quick and safe, non-pharmaceutical intervention that may be beneficial for patients with TMDs. However the clinical efficiency of LLLT in the treatment of this kind of disorders is controversial. Objectives: Literature review in reference to the use of LLLT in the treatment of TMDs, considering the scientific evidence level of the published studies. Material and Methods: A MEDLINE and COCHRANE database search was mad…

Evidence-based recommendations for the therapeutic management of angioedema owing to hereditary C1 inhibitor deficiency: consensus report of an Inter…

2011

Angioedema owing to hereditary deficiency of C1 inhibitor (HAE) is a rare, life-threatening, disabling disease. In the last 2 years, the results of well-designed and controlled trials with existing and new therapies for this condition have been published, and new treatments reached the market. Current guidelines for the treatment for HAE were released before the new trials and before the new treatments became available and were essentially based on observational studies and expert opinion. To provide evidence-based HAE treatment guidelines supported by the new studies, a conference was held in Gargnano del Garda, Italy, from September 26 to 29, 2010. The meeting hosted 58 experienced HAE ex…

Use of opioid analgesics in the treatment of cancer pain: evidence-based recommendations from the EAPC

2012

Here we provide the updated version of the guidelines of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) on the use of opioids for the treatment of cancer pain. The update was undertaken by the European Palliative Care Research Collaborative. Previous EAPC guidelines were reviewed and compared with other currently available guidelines, and consensus recommendations were created by formal international expert panel. The content of the guidelines was defined according to several topics, each of which was assigned to collaborators who developed systematic literature reviews with a common methodology. The recommendations were developed by a writing committee that combined the evidence deriv…

2016

Background: By mapping the existing literature on exercise oncology, gaps in knowledge can be identified, and future directions for research can be pointed out. Objectives: This review aimed to map diagnoses and outcome measures targeted in reviews and describe the effects on those outcomes. Further, the aim was to map exercise intervention characteristics being reviewed and the effects depending on these characteristics, and to discuss implications for future research. Methods: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Cinahl, PSYCHInfo, and Cochrane Library.
