New ways of looking into handwritten miscellanies of the seventeenth century: the case of “Spes Altera”

2020

A large number of copies of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 2 circulated in handwritten miscellanies from the second quarter of the Seventeenth Century. Eleven of those copies have significant variant readings that have led critics to put forward different hypotheses regarding their nature and quality. Most critics, taking into account stylometric analyses, have regarded them as early drafts of Shakespeare’s printed version, and have agreed on their poor quality.By paying due attention to the text’s context of production and reception, we have reached a different conclusion regarding both the nature and quality of the handwritten versions of Sonnet 2. In our view, they are the product of a conscious r…

2012

Pere Salinas and Joan Navarro initiated with Atlas (Correspondencia 2005-2007) a dialogue between painting and poetry. The book starts with a painting by Pere Salinas, which provokes a poem by Joan Navarro, which in turn provokes a painting. It continues this way until getting to 46 images and 46 poems. The concept of dialogism allows analyzing how alterity, the orientation towards a nonverbal answer, determines poetical writing. The poet, in his dialogue with each pictorial text, searches for new ways of expression that privilege the showing, from deictics to images, and this search leads to an experimentation that alters the entire poetical system. Time and space are not opposed. Painting…

National days between commemoration and celebration: remembering 1947 and 1960 in Madagascar

2013

Today Madagascar officially celebrates two national holidays. 29 March is dedicated to the memory of anticolonial resistance in 1947, the commemoration of the dead and the decoration of surviving combatants. 26 June in contrast is celebrated as Madagascar's return to independence in 1960 with parades, cultural performances, singing and dancing. But consecutive governments have altered state politics of commemoration and non-state actors have influenced the way in which 1947 and 1960 are remembered. This study of national days in Madagascar offers an interpretation of the different ways the two key events of national history have been remembered within the fifty years since Independence.

Oppressive Faces of Whiteness in Walter Mosley’s Devil in a Blue Dress

2018

Walter Mosley’s Devil in a Blue Dress contributes significantly to the literary debate on the definition of whiteness. The socio-historical construction of whiteness emerging from the novel is amplified by white imagery dovetailing with the claims made about white people directly. For the African American first person narrator, Easy Rawlins, living in post-World War II Los Angeles, whiteness mostly spells terror. The oppressive faces of whiteness consist in the following trajectories: property relations, economic exploitation, labour relations, the legal system, different miens of oppressive white masculinity denigrating blackness, spatial dynamics of post-World War II Los Angeles and the w…

Wild food plants of popular use in Sicily

2007

Abstract In the present work the authors report the result of their food ethnobotanical researches, which have been carried out in Sicily during the last thirty years. Data concerning 188 wild species used in the traditional Sicilian cuisine are reported. The authors underline those species that are partially or completely unknown for their culinary use and they illustrate other species that local inhabitants suggested in the prevention or treatment of symptomatologies caused by a refined diet, poor in vegetables. These data want to contribute to avoid the loss of traditional knowledge on uses and recipes concerning wild food botanicals, and to encourage further studies for those species th…
