Field-free two-direction alignment alternation of linear molecules by elliptic laser pulses

We show that a linear molecule subjected to a short specific elliptically polarized laser field yields postpulse revivals exhibiting alignment alternatively located along the orthogonal axis and the major axis of the ellipse. The effect is experimentally demonstrated by measuring the optical Kerr effect along two different axes. The conditions ensuring an optimal field-free alternation of high alignments along both directions are derived.

New acetophenone glucosides isolated from extracts of Helichrysum italicum with antiinflammatory activity.

Three new acetophenone glucosides (4-6), three known aglycons (1-3), and a benzo-gamma-pyrone glucoside (7) were isolated from the CH(2)Cl(2), EtOAc, and BuOH extracts from the aerial parts of Helichrysum italicum. All the compounds tested showed antiinflammatory activity in a 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced mouse ear edema test, and the ID(50) value of compound 2, the most active compound, was determined.

Cytotoxic Activity of Some Natural and Synthetic ent-Kauranes

Atractyligenin (1) and several synthetic derivatives were tested and found to be active against tumor cell replication. Compound 1 was readily converted to the 2,15-diketo (3) or 15-keto (4) derivatives, which contain an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone. Compounds 3 and 4 showed significant cytotoxic activity against all six tested cancer cell lines and were most potent against 1A9 ovarian cancer cells with EC50 values of 0.2 and 0.3 microM, respectively. These two 1-analogues are promising lead compounds for further investigation.

Bakteriālā celuloze (BC) ir biopolimērs ar potenciāli augstu pievienoto vērtību. Tās industriālā ražošana joprojām nav sasniegta augsto izmaksu dēļ. Pētījumi pierāda, ka dažādu industriālu un lauksaimniecības blakusproduktu izmantošana var samazināt augstās ražošanas izmaksas. Pētījumu ietvaros tika noskaidrota Komagataeibacter rhaeticus P 1463 spēja izmantot laktozi un galaktozi kā galveno oglekļa avotu, aizstājot glikozi standarta HS barotnē ar attiecīgajiem cukuriem. Tika novērtēta sūkalu hidrolīzes efektivitāte BC ražības palielināšanā. Enzimātiski hidrolizētu sūkalu barotnēs tika sasniegts BC sausais svars 4,95 ± 0,09 g/L. Self-employment transitions and alternation in Finnish rural and urban labour markets

.  This paper deals with the transitions and alternation between self-employment, paid-employment and non-employment in Finland in 1987–1999, paying special attention to differences in self-employment dynamics between areas characterized by different labour market conditions, viz. rural and urban locations. Markovian analysis reveals significant differences by the type of area in the processes of transition between the three labour market states.
