Midlife Physical Activity and Cognition Later in Life : A Prospective Twin Study

Background: Physical activity has been associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline but the nature of this association remains obscure. Objective: To study associations between midlife physical activity and cognition in old age for a prospective cohort of Finnish twins. Methods: Physical activity in the Finnish Twin Cohort was assessed using questionnaire responses collected in 1975 and 1981. Visual memory in Alzheimer patients: effects of practice, retention interval and severity of cognitive decline.

The study was aimed at estimating the effect size of practice, retention interval and dementia severity on free recall performance in Alzheimer patients. Patients met DSM-III-R criteria for dementia of Alzheimer type. Different picture sets were presented on 4 days. The forgetting curves on different days were compared using ANOVA for repeated measurements. Practice had a minor, but significant negative effect on recall performance explaining 1% of the variance in recall performance. Pharmacological properties of physical exercise in the elderly.

Scientific evidence links physical activity to several benefits. Recently, we proposed the idea that exercise can be regarded as a drug. As with many drugs, dosage is of great importance. However, to issue a public recommendation of physical activity in aging is not an easy task. Exercise in the elderly needs to be carefully tailored and individualized with the specific objectives of the person or group in mind. LRP1 modulates APP trafficking along early compartments of the secretory pathway

The amyloid beta peptide (A beta) is a central player in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. A beta liberation depends on APP cleavage by beta- and gamma-secretases. The low density lipoprotein receptor related protein 1 (LRP1) was shown to mediate APP processing at multiple steps. Newly synthesized LRP1 can interact with APP, implying an interaction between these two proteins early in the secretory pathway. We wanted to investigate whether LRP1 mediates APP trafficking along the secretory pathway, and, if so, whether it affects APP processing.
