In-situ observation of beta-ray induced UV optical absorption in a-SiO2: radiation darkening and room temperature recovery

2006

International audience; We studied the optical absorption in the 3.0-6.2 eV range induced in bulk amorphous SiO2 by beta-ray irradiation up to similar to 1 MGy at room temperature. The induced absorption was measured in situ both during irradiation and in the post irradiation time. Our data evidence E', center as the main defect induced by irradiation and the partial decay of their absorption band at about 5.8 eV after irradiation. A quantitative analysis of the time evolution of the induced absorption shows that the transmission recovery observed after irradiation is compatible with the reaction of radiation-induced defects with H-related (H-2, H2O) species diffusing in the amorphous matrix

Diphenoxido‐Bridged Co II and Zn II Complexes of Tripodal N 2 O 2 Ligands: Stabilisation of M II ‐Coordinated Phenoxyl Radical Species

2010

Three new tripodal ligands with an N 2 O 2 donor set, namely 2-tert-butyl-6-({(2-hydroxybenzyl)[2-(2-pyridyl)ethyl]amino}-methyl)-4-methylphenol (H 2 L 1 ), 2-tert-butyl-6-({(2-hydroxybenzyl)[2-(2-pyridyl)ethyl]amino}methyl)-4-methoxy-phenol (H 2 L 2 ) and 2-tert-butyl-6-({[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-(2-hydroxybenzyl)amino}methyl)-4-methoxyphenol (H 2 L 3 ) have been synthesised. Treatment of the ligands with Co-(CH 3 CO 2 ) 2 ·4H 2 O or [Zn(H 2 O) 6 ][ClO 4 ] 2 in the presence of Et 3 N provides the corresponding Co II and Zn" complexes of composition [M II 2 (L 1 ) 2 ] [M = Co (1) (single-crystals are a solvate with the composition [Co II 2 (L 1 ) 2 ]·2CHCl 3 , i.e. 1·2CHCl 3 ); M = Zn (2)],…

Integrating the Real and Virtual World for Academic Language Education in Second Life

2013

This chapter focuses on a Second Language Acquisition (SLA) study conducted in virtual worlds that could help teachers in terms of knowledge about acquisition processes, in which technology is integration between formal and non formal education. The research comprises of two studies strongly focused on the development of Italian oral language proficiency. It was held within Second Life® (SL™)1 in order to explore the affordances of public spaces to enhance Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC)2 and to stimulate the oral production through learner’s engagement. Since 2007, a new pilot project, Café Italia, was developed by Carmela Dell’Aria (aka Misy Ferraris) in Second Life®. Startin…

Dual targeting of higher-order DNA structures by azacryptands induces DNA junction-mediated DNA damage in cancer cells

2021

Abstract DNA is intrinsically dynamic and folds transiently into alternative higher-order structures such as G-quadruplexes (G4s) and three-way DNA junctions (TWJs). G4s and TWJs can be stabilised by small molecules (ligands) that have high chemotherapeutic potential, either as standalone DNA damaging agents or combined in synthetic lethality strategies. While previous approaches have claimed to use ligands that specifically target either G4s or TWJs, we report here on a new approach in which ligands targeting both TWJs and G4s in vitro demonstrate cellular effects distinct from that of G4 ligands, and attributable to TWJ targeting. The DNA binding modes of these new, dual TWJ-/G4-ligands w…

Amphibians and squamate reptiles from the stratigraphic unit Xb of El Salt (Middle Palaeolithic; Alcoy, Spain): palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimati…

2020

The locality of El Salt (Middle Paleolithic, Alcoy, Spain) is mainly known by having one of the youngest Neanderthals records of the southeastern Iberian Peninsula. In this work, we have analysed the herpetofaunal fossils from the upper part of stratigraphic unit Xb, dated at 52.3 ± 4.6 ka (MIS 3). The faunal list is composed by three taxa of anurans (Alyte obstetricans, Bufo bufo s.l., and Epidalea calamita), one taxon of blanid (Blanus cinereus s.l.), two taxa of lizards (Chalcides bedriagai and cf. Acanthodactylus erythrurus), and one taxon of snakes (cf. Rhinechis scalaris). All of them have a broad distribution range in the Mediterranean, with wide ecological preferences range. This as…

Andrei Șerban: The Search for ‘New Forms’

2021

This chapter discusses the theatre of Andrei Șerban, definitely one of the most important theatre directors of the second half of the twentieth century. He began directing in Communist Romania in the 1960s and had to deal with censorship, so in order to avoid this uncomfortable context, he focused on interpreting the text—he constantly searched for new nuances and made use of all possible subtexts. These are the premises of his work and when he moved to the USA, he continued this artistic strategy. Throughout his career, Andrei Șerban has been passionate about staging The Seagull (five times), as he is constantly looking for new forms, just like Chekhov’s character Treplev. A special accent…

A broader model for C 4 photosynthesis evolution in plants inferred from the goosefoot family (Chenopodiaceae s.s.)

2012

C 4 photosynthesis is a fascinating example of parallel evolution of a complex trait involving multiple genetic, biochemical and anatomical changes. It is seen as an adaptation to deleteriously high levels of photorespiration. The current scenario for C 4 evolution inferred from grasses is that it originated subsequent to the Oligocene decline in CO 2 levels, is promoted in open habitats, acts as a pre-adaptation to drought resistance, and, once gained, is not subsequently lost. We test the generality of these hypotheses using a dated phylogeny of Amaranthaceae s.l. (including Chenopodiaceae), which includes the largest number of C 4 lineages in eudicots. The oldest chenopod C 4 lineage da…

High susceptibility of MDR and XDR Gram-negative pathogens to biphenyl-diacetylene-based difluoromethyl-allo-threonyl-hydroxamate LpxC inhibitors

2016

International audience; Inhibitors of uridine diphosphate-3-O-(R-3-hydroxymyristoyl)-N-acetylglucosamine deacetylase (LpxC, which catalyses the first, irreversible step in lipid A biosynthesis) are a promising new class of antibiotics against Gram-negative bacteria. The objectives of the present study were to: (i) compare the antibiotic activities of three LpxC inhibitors (LPC-058, LPC-011 and LPC-087) and the reference inhibitor CHIR-090 against Gram-negative bacilli (including MDR and XDR isolates); and (ii) investigate the effect of combining these inhibitors with conventional antibiotics.MethodsMICs were determined for 369 clinical isolates (234 Enterobacteriaceae and 135 non-fermentati…
