Almas (fragmento de 'Le vergini folli')

2019

Amalia Guglielminetti was born in Turin in 1881. He had a religious school education, conditioned by the presence of his grandfather, who assumed the role of pater familias after the death of Amalia's father. His first book of poems was published in 1901, but it was considered too childish and simple. With the second, however, Le vergini folli (of which we have translated the first section, dedicated to souls), he achieved success and his verses, well structured and of great technical perfection, earned him the praise of her teacher, Arturo Graf, of the critic Dino Mantovani and of the poet Guido Gozzano, especially because of their spontaneity. However, she considered that she had barely t…

Una caracterització cognitiva de les preguntes confirmatòries: (question tags)

1995

This paper is an attempt to provide a cognitive approach to question tags, as grammatical constructions that show different syntactic forms. We propose an account based on the following points: (i) definition of question tags, (ii) contrastive analysis of the structures in several languages (Catalan, Spanish, French, Italian, English and German), (iii) pragmatic approach to question tags, (iv) syntactic approach, and (v) study of question tags as grammatical constructions. Our main claim is that the various forms that they show in the languages considered are closely related, and that they evidenciate some of the three definitory characteristics of the construction, namely, its mixed modali…

2009

This article deals with a new copy of Amadís de Gaula, printed in Venice in 1533, which was found by the author within the Special Collections of the University of Arkansas Library. This work focuses on the origin of the copy, as well as on one of its first owners, most likely an Italian reader. Through this paper we provide a physical description of this copy, according to the model proposed by Professor Lucía Megías.

Gramaticalització i funció discursiva dels verbs de percepció

2005

This paper deals with Catalan perception verbs reanalyzed as discourse markers. The study focuses on the forms «aviam, a veure» (derived from veure ‘to see’), «miri» (from mirar ‘to look’), and «escolti» (from escoltar ‘to listen’), in a corpus of electoral debate. The research shows the interrelation between semantic and morphosyntactic features, on the one hand, and between these formal aspects and the pragmatic functions of the markers, on the other hand. The analysis highlights that perception verbs as discourse markers indicate power and politeness relationships among the participants in political debates, and this use is closely related to their origin as (active/passive, visual/audit…

El llemosinisme valencià a la darreria del segle XIX

1991

As this paper tries to show, the association between the terms Catalan and llemosí, traditionally used in an indiscriminate way when mainly referring to Catalan, was clearly revised and corrected by the middle of the 19th century both in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, but not so in Valencia, where its persistence can be seen as the clear expression of an outstanding form of local particularism vis à vis the raising linguistic Catalanism.

A cognitive-based approach to President Obama’s educational discourse through the lens of his State of the Union Addresses (2009-2016)

2017

In order to gain a cultural understanding of the discourse on education used by President Obama, this article examines the source domains commonly used to refer to education in his State of the Union Addresses, from the time he took office in 2009 to 2016 when he will leave office. The study will proceed by applying insights from Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), within the field of cognitive linguistics, supplemented by the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) developed by the Pragglejazz Group. The source domains identified and discussed are: COMPETITION and ECONOMICS. In fact, the strong coherence in Obama’s speeches relies on the use of the story of competition as the concept that is…

Emphasis is put on some aspects of variations, such as field of discourse, tone and tenor, wich determine the kind of registers. Another aspect trated in the paper is writings stylistic and the relationship between spoken language and its literary reproduction. Most ot these questions are debatable in catalan, as well as translation, administrative language and journalistic style guides. In the same way geograph…

Usefulness of biomarkers as intermediate endpoints in health risks posed by occupational lead exposure

2015

The article concerns potential harmful effects of exposure to lead. Although the occurrence of severe lead poisoning has receded in several countries, occupational exposure resulting in moderate and clinically symptomatic toxicity is still common. An earlier and precise characterization of an individual response is obligatory in order to assess the possible risks for human health. Biomarkers may fill important gaps in the path from exposure to a disease. Specifically speaking, emerging (DNA double strand breaks and telomeric DNA erosion) and validated (micronuclei induction and chromosomal aberrations) biomarkers of genotoxicity seem to provide evidence for the assessment of molecular and c…

Progenitor death drives retinal dysplasia and neuronal degeneration in a mouse model of Atrip-Seckel syndrome

2020

ABSTRACT Seckel syndrome is a type of microcephalic primordial dwarfism (MPD) that is characterized by growth retardation and neurodevelopmental defects, including reports of retinopathy. Mutations in key mediators of the replication stress response, the mutually dependent partners ATR and ATRIP, are among the known causes of Seckel syndrome. However, it remains unclear how their deficiency disrupts the development and function of the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we investigated the cellular and molecular consequences of ATRIP deficiency in different cell populations of the developing murine neural retina. We discovered that conditional inactivation of Atrip in photoreceptor neurons …
