Mass phone surveillance programs – security vs. civil liberties?

2017

Following September 11 attacks, America has increased its intelligence and defense capabilities. In particular, a historic law named USA Patriot Act was passed by Bush administration together with President’s Surveillance Program. Though the emotional trauma and immediate strategic need to defend the homeland is understandable as it is commendable that the law was passed relatively quick, the Constitution of the United States is what makes this nation so developed and great. This inquiry will take a deep look into the law in relation to unwarranted surveillance over phone activities of the people and assess its constitutionality. To support the assessment, the development of the relevant la…

A dynamic analysis of SP 500, FTSE 100 and EURO STOXX 50 indices under different exchange rates.

2018

In this study, we assess the dynamic evolution of short-term correlation, long-term cointe-gration and Error Correction Model (hereafter referred to as ECM)-based long-term Granger causality between each pair of US, UK, and Eurozone stock markets from 1980 to 2015 using the rolling-window technique. A comparative analysis of pairwise dynamic integration and causality of stock markets, measured in common and domestic currency terms, is conducted to evaluate comprehensively how exchange rate fluctuations affect the time-varying integration among the S&P 500, FTSE 100 and EURO STOXX 50 indices. The results obtained show that the dynamic correlation, cointegration and ECM-based long-run Gra…

Santa Muerte jako osobliwość, święty ludowy i przykład synkretyzmu religijnego

2016

Kult Santa Muerte spełnia warunki umożliwiające sklasyfikowanie go jako przykładu synkretyzmu religijnego i egzemplifikacji świętego ludowego.

Understanding seismic path biases and magmatic activity at Mount St Helens volcano before its 2004 eruption

2020

SUMMARY In volcanoes, topography, shallow heterogeneity and even shallow morphology can substantially modify seismic coda signals. Coda waves are an essential tool to monitor eruption dynamics and model volcanic structures jointly and independently from velocity anomalies: it is thus fundamental to test their spatial sensitivity to seismic path effects. Here, we apply the Multiple Lapse Time Window Analysis (MLTWA) to measure the relative importance of scattering attenuation vs absorption at Mount St Helens volcano before its 2004 eruption. The results show the characteristic dominance of scattering attenuation in volcanoes at lower frequencies (3–6 Hz), while absorption is the primary atte…

Fatty acids and sugar composition of avocado fruit during harvesting time and post-harvest ripening period: A review

2018

In a study of the maturity of avocado fruit it is important to elucidate the lipid metabolism in the fruit during growth and storage, since the avocado stores a large amount of lipids in the edible pulp. Meanwhile the fatty acids may then form fats by combining with glycerol, a sugar metabolism product, and sugar metabolism of the avocado fruit should be considered.

Oviposition deterrence and repellent activities of selected essential oils against Tuta absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae): laboratory and g…

2022

AbstractTuta absoluta, an invasive pinworm characterized by high reproductive potential and adaptation to different agroecological conditions, cause serious damage to tomato crops. Chemical control with synthetic insecticides is widely used to control this pest, although pesticides exhibit side effects on non-target organisms and negatively impact the environment, with the occurrence of resistance to some active substances in the target pest. The use of essential oils (EOs) from aromatic or officinal plants could represent an environmentally safe control method, alternative to synthetic insecticide application. In this work we investigated the effect of EOs from Spanish oregano, laurel, bas…
