Polish Americans in the History of Bilingual Lexicography: The State of the Art

2018

This paper measures dictionaries made by Polish Americans against the development of the Polish–English and English–Polish lexicographic tradition. Of twenty nine monoscopal and biscopal glossaries and dictionaries published between 1788 and 1947, four may be treated as mile-stones: Erazm Rykaczewski's (1849–1851), Władysław Kierst and Oskar Callier's (1895), Władysław Kierst's (1926–1928), and Jan Stanisławski's (1929). Unsurprisingly, they came to be widely repub-lished in English-speaking countries, primarily the United States of America, for the sake of Polish-speaking immigrants. One might therefore wonder whether there was any pressing need for new dictionaries. There must have been, …

2012

Antoine Traisnel, Capture: American Pursuits and the Making of a New Animal Condition

2021

You can’t judge a book by its cover. Or so they say. But the cover of Antoine Traisnel’s Capture: American Pursuits and the Making of a New Animal Condition is striking and, one is tempted to say, captivating. And so is the book. The cover features colorful images of various birds—such as the ruby-throated hummingbird, the tufted coquette or the buff-tailed sicklebill—taken from one of the most impressive plates in Ernst Haeckel’s Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature) and interlaced on ...

¿Latinoamérica : un desvío necesario? Baltasar Garzón, de Pinochet a Franco

2011

“ ‘What are patterns for?: the horizons of form in The New Poetry (1917)”

2009

In the early twentieth century, the relationship between poets and the rules that preside over composition is cast as a conflictual one, characteristic of modernity's mythologizing of formal innovation as a path to artistic autonomy, achieved through the destruction of codes. The anthology entitled The New Poetry, which was published in 1917 by Harriet Monroe and Alice Corbin Henderson, faithfully reflects the construct of a poetics established upon the reappraisal of the constraints set by meter and rhyme, as in the example of free verse. However, while celebrating avenues to experiment, the anthology brings to light the limitations of the myth of formal autonomy in a cultural climate shap…

Thomas Constantinesco, Writing Pain in the Nineteenth-Century United States

2023

Pain is part of life. It is part of literature as well. And in Writing Pain in the Nineteenth-Century United States, Thomas Constantinesco offers an intelligent, clearly organized, and insightful exploration of various ways in which pain is expressed—or not—through the written word in a selection of American literary works from the 1800s. Constantinesco takes his initial inspiration, in part, from Elaine Scarry’s The Body in Pain, a controversial work published in 1985, which has become recog...
