ODOUR STUDY WITH QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS IN VARIOUS DISTRICTS OF RIGA

2017

Different emission sources of odours become increasingly important environmental problem which may have a negative impact on human health and quality of life. Human odour perception may be subjective, however on odour perception threshold is considered to be the odorant concentration where at least half of odour assessor’s group members confirm the existence of odour, and then it is 1 OUE /m3. Nowadays more and more advanced technologies are used to measure odour concentration. Olfactometer Scentroid SM100 allows users to accurately quantify ambient odour concentration in field. Also this equipment allows to collect source samples and analyze odour in a laboratory. Odour study in 2016 and 2…

Gas emissions and crustal deformation from the Krýsuvík high temperature geothermal system, Iceland

2020

Abstract The Krýsuvik volcanic system is located on the oblique spreading Reykjanes Peninsula, SW Iceland. Since early 2009 the region has been undergoing episodes of localized ground uplift and subsidence. From April–November 2013, we operated near-real time monitoring of gas emissions in Krýsuvik, using a Multi-component Gas Analyzer System (Multi-GAS), collecting data on gas composition from a fumarole (H2O, CO2, SO2, H2S). The dataset in this study, comprises a near-continuous gas composition time series, the quantification of diffuse CO2 gas flux, analytical results for direct samples of dry gas, seismic records, and GPS data. Gas emissions from the Krýsuvik geothermal system were exam…

The role of VOC oxidation products in continental new particle formation

2008

Abstract. Aerosol physical and chemical properties and trace gas concentrations were measured during the QUEST field campaign in March–April, 2003, in Hyytiälä, Finland. Our aim was to understand the role of oxidation products of VOC's such as mono- and sesquiterpenes in atmospheric nucleation events. Particle chemical compositions were measured using the Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer, and chemical compositions of aerosol samples collected with low-pressure impactors and a high volume sampler were analysed using a number of techniques. The results indicate that during and after new particle formation, all particles larger than 50 nm in diameter contained similar organic substances that…

Phase-Noise and Amplitude-Noise Measurement of DACs and DDSs

2019

This article proposes a method for the measurement of Phase Noise (PN, or PM noise) and Amplitude Noise (AN, or AM noise) of Digital-to-Analog Converters (DAC) and Direct Digital Synthesizers (DDS) based on modulation-index amplification. The carrier is first reduced by a controlled amount (30-40 dB) by adding a reference signal of nearly equal amplitude and opposite in phase. Then, residual carrier and noise sidebands are amplified and sent to a conventional PN analyzer. The main virtues of our method are: (i) the noise specs of the PN analyzer are relaxed by a factor equal to the carrier suppression ratio; and, (ii) the capability to measure the AN using a PN analyzer, with no need for th…

Towards high-accuracy mass spectrometry of highly charged short-lived ions at ISOLTRAP

2006

Dedicated to H.-J. Kluge on the occasion of his 65th birthday anniversary - Jürgen Kluge Special Issue; Multiply charged ions of stable xenon isotopes from a plasma ion source have been mass-selected by the on-line mass separator ISOLDE/CERN and delivered to the triple-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. The doubly charged ions that survived the charge-exchange processes during bunching and ion preparation were transferred to a precision Penning trap for mass determination. Mass values were obtained for the isotopes with mass numbers A=126,129,130,136. They are consistent with previous results except for the case of $^{126}Xe$ where a significant deviation from the literature value was found. …

Hill Runner's Physiology, Performance and Nutrition: A Descriptive Study.

2021

Objectives: The aim of this descriptive study was to characterise anthropometric variables, aerobic capacity, running performance and energy intake and expenditure of hill runners in free-living conditions, and to investigate the relationship between age, anthropometric variables, aerobic capacity and running performance. Methods: Twenty-eight hill runners participated in this study (17 males and 11 females; aged 18–65 years). Body fat percentage estimate, sum of eight skinfolds (triceps, subscapular, biceps, iliac crest, supraspinale, abdominal, front thigh and medial calf) and maximal oxygen capacity (VO2max) were assessed in a laboratory setting. Participants also completed a timed hill r…

Hardware and software designing of USB based plug n play data acquisition device with C# and LabView compatibility

2015

As interdisciplinary sciences getting popular with every passing day, the need of electronic devices interfacing with a PC is also increasing. Very useful products (Arduino, RasberryPi, etc) made their way in commercial market to cater such needs however they require programming skills, specific IDE's (integrated development environments) and lack compatibility with useful tools such as NI (National Instrument) LabView[1] and C#. Since these two (C# and LabView) are supposed to be widely used for their user friendliness, but unfortunately are not prioritised as a development option due to lack of supporting hardware which is either too expensive, rare or too complex. Hence in this research …

Modular Breath Analyzer (MBA): Introduction of a Breath Analyzer Platform Based on an Innovative and Unique, Modular eNose Concept for Breath Diagnos…

2021

Exhaled breath analysis for early disease detection may provide a convenient method for painless and non-invasive diagnosis. In this work, a novel, compact and easy-to-use breath analyzer platform with a modular sensing chamber and direct breath sampling unit is presented. The developed analyzer system comprises a compact, low volume, temperature-controlled sensing chamber in three modules that can host any type of resistive gas sensor arrays. Furthermore, in this study three modular breath analyzers are explicitly tested for reproducibility in a real-life breath analysis experiment with several calibration transfer (CT) techniques using transfer samples from the experiment. The experiment …

Validation of Methylmercury Determinations in Aquatic Systems by Alkyl Derivatization Methods for GC Analysis Using ICP-IDMS

2001

Isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS), using an inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometer (ICPMS) and a species-specific methylmercury spike was applied to validate the commonly used GC method for methylmercury (MeHg+) determination, which is based on the formation of volatile methylethylmercury by derivatization with NaBEt4. The spike compound, Me201Hg+, was synthesized by reaction of 201Hg-enriched mercury chloride with methylcobalamin. By analyzing different environmental aquatic samples, it was found that in most cases, transformation of MeHg+ into elemental mercury (Hg0) took place. From investigations of synthetic solutions, it could be followed that halide ions are …

Excess volatiles supplied by mingling of mafic magma at an andesite arc volcano

2010

We present the results of a study of volcanic gases at Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat, which includes the first spectroscopic measurements of the major gas species CO2 and H2S at this volcano using a Multisensor Gas Analyzer System (MultiGAS) sensor. The fluxes of CO2 and H2S were 640.2750 t/d and 84.266 t/d, respectively, during July 2008, during a prolonged eruptive pause. The flux of CO2 is similar to estimates for the entire arc from previous geochemical studies, while the measured H2S flux significantly alters our interpretation of the sulphur budget for this volcano. The fluxes of both sulphur and carbon show considerable excesses over that which can be supplied by degassing of e…
