Primary schwannoma of the thyroid gland involving the isthmus: report of a case

Primary thyroid schwannomas are extremely rare tumors and there are very few reports of such tumors in the literature. This report presents a rare case of schwannoma involving the isthmus of the thyroid in a 47-year-old male, presenting as a symptomatic predominating cold nodule within a multinodular goiter. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy. The histological examination indicated an Antoni A-type schwannoma. The clinical, radiological and pathological findings of the tumor are discussed, emphasizing the difficulty in reaching a correct preoperative diagnosis. Endurance Exercise and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) Supplementation Up-Regulate CYP17A1 and Stimulate Testosterone Biosynthesis

A new role for fat supplements, in particular conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), has been delineated in steroidogenesis, although the underlying molecular mechanisms have not yet been elucidated. The aims of the present study were to identify the pathway stimulated by CLA supplementation using a cell culture model and to determine whether this same pathway is also stimulated in vivo by CLA supplementation associated with exercise. Pupil size differences between female and male patients after cataract surgery.

Purpose To evaluate the changes in pupil diameter in women and men after cataract surgery. The correlation of pupillary changes with the variables age and anterior chamber depth will be analyzed. Methods The values of 109 randomized eyes who underwent cataract surgery were obtained and divided into two groups, 71 women and 38 men. Pupil diameter was measured preoperatively and 3-months postoperatively using the pupillometer software of the Topolyzer Vario (Wavelight Laser Technologie AG). Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are produced in response to various stressors, including ischemia-reperfusion, and they can exit cells and reach the blood. In this pilot study, we determined serum levels of Hsp60 and heme-oxygenase-1 (HO-1; also named Hsp32) in subjects with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) to assess their clinical significance and potential prognostic value. Insulin resistance as common molecular denominator linking obesity to Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an aging-related multi-factorial disorder to which metabolic factors contribute at what has canonically been considered a centrally mediated process. Although the exact underlying mechanisms are still unknown, obesity is recognized as a risk factor for AD and the condition of insulin resistance seems to be the link between the two pathologies. Using mice with high fat diet (HFD) obesity we dissected the molecular mechanisms shared by the two disorders. A two or one pot synthesis has been used for the reaction of hyaluronic acid (HA) with octadecylamine (C-18) and hydrazine (Hy). In both cases, the chemical derivatization involved primary hydroxyl groups of hyaluronic acid and not its carboxyl groups, whose presence is important for receptor interaction. Naphthalimide imidazolium-based supramolecular hydrogels as bioimaging and theranostic soft materials
