Third nerve palsy as the sole manifestation of midbrain ischemia

1995

Thirty-seven patients with risk factors for the development of cerebrovascular diseases had sudden onset isolated third nerve palsy and abnormal masseter reflex and/or electro-oculographic findings indicating a causative midbrain lesion. Improvement or recovery of the third nerve palsies was accompanied by improvement or recovery of the abnormal electrophysiologic findings pointing to their functional significance. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 29 of these patients demonstrated corresponding ischemic midbrain lesions in eight, ipsilateral in five patients, bilateral in three. In another three patients with MRI proven midbrain lesions (ipsilateral in two, bilateral in one) electrophysi…

Analysis of inter-atrium differences in paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation using principal component analysis

2007

The pathophysiological mechanisms of atrial fibrillation (AF) are not entirely clear yet, and there is no full explanation for the development and evolution of the arrhythmia. The goal of this study is to find inter-atrium differences in electrophysiological behavior between persistent and paroxysmal AF. The database analyzed contains intra-cardiac records from 14 patients with paroxysmal AF and 10 with persistent AF. Dominant frequency and sample entropy measurements showed that in the paroxysmal group there was a left-to-right gradient. These differences were enhanced after the extraction of the main components with principal component analysis. These findings may be interpreted as a poss…

Effects of Different Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Parameters on Quadriceps Neuromuscular Performance in Competitive Athletes

2017

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of six weeks of training with two different types of neuromuscular electrostimulation (NMES) currents on muscle performance in competitive athletes. METHODS: This controlled and randomized clinical trial included 20 athletes, equally divided into three groups: medium frequency current group with 500 μs (MF-500) (n=7), low frequency current group of with 500 μs (PC-500) (n=5) and control group (CG) (n=8). Each group had evaluated, before and after the intervention: the peak torque of knee (PT), muscle thickness and signs of electromyography (EMG) of the vastus lateralis (VL), and the sensory discomfort level (VAS). The training with NMES was performed 3 times…

INT-009 Pharmacokinetics of linezolid and meropenem in intensive care unit patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy

2016

Background Intensive care unit (ICU) patients often suffer from infections and acute renal failure and might need continuous renal replacement therapy commonly applied by veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD) or hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF). In this case there are no dosage recommendations in the product informations of antibiotics and literature data are scarce. The risk for therapy failure, development of resistance and adverse drug effects is elevated. Purpose Aim of the presented study was to find out if standard therapy of Linezolid (LZ) and Meropenem (MP) results in adequate plasma levels in surgical ICU patients receiving CVVHD(F). Materials and Methods Surgical ICU patients receiving CVVHD…

Efficacy of diclofenac eyedrops in preventing postoperative inflammation and long-term cystoid macular edema.

1997

Abstract Purpose: To compare the efficacy and tolerance of diclofenac 0.1 % eyedrops with a regimen that included a brief course of steroids in the treatment of postoperative inflammation after extracapsular cataract surgery and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. A second objective was to compare the efficacy of diclofenac 0.1% eyedrops in the same patients and control group in preventing cystoid macular edema (CME). Setting: Eight university/hospital centers and one company in Italy. Methods: The multicenter, controlled, randomized, prospective, double-blind study included 281 patients. All were evaluated at baseline, at surgery, and after 1, 5, 36, 67, and 140 days. Postoper…

Evaluation of the McGrath® Series 5 videolaryngoscope after failed direct laryngoscopy*

2010

Summary Unanticipated difficulties during tracheal intubation and failure to intubate are among the leading causes of anaesthesia-related morbidity and mortality. Using the technique of video laryngoscopy, the alignment of the oral and pharyngeal axes to facilitate tracheal intubation is unnecessary. In this study we evaluated the McGrath® Series 5 videolaryngoscope for tracheal intubation in 61 patients who exhibited Cormack and Lehane grade 3 or 4 laryngoscopies with a Macintosh laryngoscope. Using the McGrath resulted in an improved glottic view, compared to Macintosh laryngoscope. Laryngoscopy was improved by one grade in 10%, by two grades in 80% and by three grades in 10% of cases (p …

Discordancia clínico-radiológica y resolución espontánea de un hematoma postcateterización epidural

2008

Neuraxial techniques are considered safe if certain guidelines are followed, but they are not risk free. We report the case of an 81-year-old woman with an invasive bladder tumor who underwent radical cystectomy with a Bricker-type procedure. General anesthesia was used and epidural analgesia was also provided for surgical and postoperative pain management. Late in the postoperative recovery period a large epidural hematoma was diagnosed based on radiologic signs of spinal cord compression, in the absence of symptoms other than mild and progressive back pain that developed after extubation. The surgeon decided against emergency surgery to reduce compression. Symptoms resolved gradually, and…

Minimalheparinisierung bei Dialysepatienten mit erhöhter Blutungsgefährdung

2008

Abstract In 78 patients (47 men, 31 women; mean age 53 [22-78] years) 174 dialyses were undertaken within one week of a bleeding episode or a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure which may cause bleeding. Minimal anticoagulation with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) was the aim, using a biocompatible dialyser. During the dialysis coagulation was controlled by global tests (Quick value/international normalized ratio [INR], partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, antifactor Xa activity), by molecular markers of clotting activity (thrombin-antithrombin III complex [TAT], D-dimers), as well as measurement of elastase (elastase-alpha 1-protein inhibitor complex). The LMWH dosage averaged 9…

Current methods of sedation in dental patients : a systematic review of the literature

2015

Objetive The main objective of this systematic literature review is to identify the safest and most effective sedative drugs so as to ensure successful sedation with as few complications as possible. Study Design A systematic literature review of the PubMed MEDLINE database was carried out using the key words “conscious sedation,” “drugs,” and “dentistry.” A total of 1,827 scientific articles were found, and these were narrowed down to 473 articles after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. These 473 studies were then individually assessed for their suitability for inclusion in this literature review. Results A total of 21 studies were selected due to their rigorous study design and c…
