'Contextualized lexicography',

2005

The essay takes into examination the technique by which words drawn from glossaries or other kinds of lexicographic compilations were embedded in both prose and verse and went to build a lexical continuum. The definition I propose for such a technique is ‘contextualized lexicography’. It dates from late antiquity, if not earlier, but it was in a number of works composed in the Middle Ages and circulating in the British Isles that it became the governing principle of composition. A penchant for this device is evident in different genres, both literary and utilitarian. These works were written with various aims and addressed to different kinds of audience. The stylistic feature under discussi…

‘A Storehouse of Learned Vocabulary: the Abbo Glossaries in Anglo-Saxon England’,

2010

The entire textual transmission of a late ninth-century poem, the Bella Parisiacae urbis by Abbo of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, is indissolubly tied with glosses and glossaries. The peculiarity of its composition as well as its large circulation makes this poem a perfect case study for the role and development of medieval glossography. The essay is divided into three sections devoted to the relationship between the poem and the products of medieval glossography: 1. glossaries were a source of Abbo’s poem, which in turn was, from the very outset, provided with glosses; 2. in England the third book of Abbo’s poem became a source of glossaries itself, and, 3. in the course of its transmission, Abb…

'Glosse in volgare e in latino nei codici anglosassoni’

2012

The Abbo glossary in London, British Library, Cotton Domitian i

1990

The process through which glossaries came into being can sometimes still be seen and studied in surviving manuscripts, and in such cases it provides a valuable index to the way in which Latin texts were studied in medieval schools. This is the case with an unprinted glossary in London, British Library, Cotton Domitian i. The glossary is mainly made up of words taken from bk III of the Bella Parisiacae urbis by Abbo of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a work which was widely studied in English schools in the tenth and eleventh centuries, above all because of its unusual vocabulary. We know that Abbo drew the unusual vocabulary in his poem from pre-existing glossaries such as the Liber glossarum and t…

'A Difficult School Text in Anglo-Saxon England: The Third Book of Abbo’s Bella Parisiacae urbis', in Leeds Studies in English 37 (2006)

2006
