Risk assessment of gypsum amendment on agricultural fields: Effects of sulfate on riverine biota

2022

Gypsum (CaSO4 ∙ 2H2 O) amendment is a promising way of decreasing the phosphorus loading of arable lands, and of thus preventing aquatic eutrophication. However, in freshwaters with low sulfate concentrations, gypsum-released sulfate may pose a threat to the biota. To assess such risks, we performed a series of sulfate toxicity tests in the laboratory and conducted field surveys. These field surveys were associated with a large-scale pilot exercise involving spreading gypsum on agricultural fields covering 18% of the Savijoki River catchment area. The gypsum amendment in such fields resulted in about fourfold increase in the mean sulfate concentration for a 2-month period, and a transient, …

The ANP Genetic Variant RS5068 is Associated With a Favorable Cardiometabolic Phenotype in a Mediterranean Population

2012

Introduction: Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) possesses cardiorenal protective properties including natriuresis, aldosterone suppression and vasodilation. Importantly, ANP also exerts lipolytic effects in vitro and in vivo. Previous studies reported that the ANP genetic variant rs5068 is associated with increased plasma levels of ANP, lower blood pressure values, and reduced risk of hypertension. We recently reported that in a random sample of the general population from Olmsted County, MN the G allele of rs5068 was associated with increased levels of ANP, lower blood pressure and BMI, waist circumference, reduced prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. To date, these associations ha…

Well‐being among employed and non‐employed caregiving women in Taiwan

2012

Chou Y-C, Kroger T, Chiao C, Pu C-Y. Well-being among employed and non-employed caregiving women in Taiwan This study addressed various groups of non-employed/employed and non-caring/caring women in Taiwan. Data from the 2006 National Taiwanese Women Survey (at age 16–64, n= 6,017) were analysed to determine whether there are differences in terms of well-being, as measured by self-rated health and family life satisfaction, between women who work and/or care and between different carer groups. Other factors associated with well-being of carers of young children (n= 1,697) were also analysed. The results showed that non-employed carers of disabled adults stood out as the most disadvantaged gr…

Effect of perceived stigmatisation on the quality of life among ageing female family carers: a comparison of carers of adults with intellectual disab…

2009

Background  Little account has been taken of quality of life (QoL) among family carers of adults with an intellectual disability (ID) and family carers of adults with a mental illness (MI), particularly the female ageing carers' perceived stigma. We explore whether there are differences in the significant predictors of female ageing family carers' QoL between family carers of adults with ID and family carers of adults with MI and aim to examine the effect of these differences in stigma on carer QoL between the two groups. Methods  A structural survey interview was administered to 350 female family carers supporting persons with ID and 66 female carers supporting persons with MI; the carers …

Cost analysis of an exercise program for older women with respect to social welfare and healthcare costs: a pilot study

2008

The aim of this study was to analyze social welfare and healthcare costs and fall-related healthcare costs after a group-based exercise program. The 10-week exercise program, which started after discharge from the hospital, was designed to improve physical fitness, mood, and functional abilities in frail elderly women. Sixty-eight acutely hospitalized and mobility-impaired women (mean age 83.0, SD 3.9 years) were randomized into either group-based (intervention) or home exercise (control) groups. Information on costs was collected during 1 year after hospital discharge. There were no differences between the intervention and control groups in the mean individual healthcare costs: 4381 euros …

Work environment risk indicators for pharmacists in the preparation of extemporaneous medicines

2022

The pharmaceutical sector is one of the leading sectors of the Latvian economy, but the extemporary prepared medicines still occupy a small market share. The study involved 44 pharmacists and pharmacist assistants preparing extemporal medicines, while the control group included pharmacists and pharmacist assistants who only attend customers in pharmacies. The aim of this study was to identify work environment risk indicators for pharmacists preparing extemporal medicines in open-type pharmacies. In the research, we used methods of observation and survey to identify the views of pharmacists and pharmacist assistants preparing medicines in open-type pharmacies. The study concluded that pharma…
