Realization and drive tests of active thin glass x-ray mirrors
2016
A technique to obtain lightweight and high-resolution focusing mirror segments for large aperture X-ray telescopes is the hot slumping of thin glass foils. In this approach, already successfully experimented to manufacture the optics of the NuSTAR X-ray telescope, thin glasses are formed at high temperature onto a precisely figured mould. The formed glass foils are subsequently stacked onto a stiff backplane with a common axis and focus to form an XOU (X-ray Optical Unit), to be later integrated in the telescope optic structure. In this process, the low thickness of the glass foils guarantees a low specific mass and a very low obstruction of the effective area. However, thin glasses are sub…
Texturing of Indium Phosphide for Improving the Characteristics of Space Solar Cells
2021
This paper discusses and demonstrates the usefulness and prospects of using textured layers of indium phosphide as a material for space solar cells. Such designs improve the performance of the photovoltaic converter by increasing the effective area and surface roughness. Thus, it minimizes the background reflectivity of the surface. Textured layers on the InP surface were obtained by electrochemical etching using a bromous acid solution.
CNT-based RFID passive gas sensor
2011
Summary form only given, as follows. Single-wall carbon nanotube (CNT) is examined for the design of a passive and maintenance-free wireless RFID sensor. CNT buckypaper is characterized from a dielectric and a sensitivity point of view, using an indirect way, by using antenna measurement and simulations in a controlled medium. A CNT-based prototype RFID tag is then described as the featured maintenance free sensor and experimentally verified for its applicability and sensitivity towards NH3.
Further investigations on populations of the deep-water blue and red shrimp Aristeus antennatus (Risso, 1816) (Decapoda, Dendrobranchiata), as inferr…
2012
The aim of this study was to integrate existing mitochondrial DNA data relating to the deep-sea blue and red shrimp Aristeus antennatus (Risso, 1816) with data obtained by Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP). A total of 145 AFLP polymorphic loci were scored in 236 specimens collected from one Atlantic and seven Mediterranean sample sites. AMOVA results revealed that the overall genetic variation among-populations was lower (11.81%) than within-populations (88.19%). The genetic variation between the Atlantic and Mediterranean samples was found to be not significant ( Φ CT = − 0 . 007 ; N.S.), indicating that the transition area between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea d…
Contrôle de nano-antennes optiques par une commande électrique : tuner plasmonique et transduction
2011
Optical nano-antennae are the new class of components to control light/matterinteraction at the nanoscale. These devices are operating in the visible to near infraredpart of the spectrum. The properties of these nano objects are controlled by theform, the size and the material. In the radio frequency domain, the tuner changes dynamically the operatingwavelength of the antenna. In this thesis work, we search to transfer this conceptto the nanoscale. The principle is to change the load impedance of the antenna, i.e.changing the optical index of the dielectric medium around the nano-object. Forthat we used anisotropic liquid cristal molecules. The value of the optical index iscontrolled by appl…
Joint LMMSE equalizer for HSDPA in full-rate space time transmit diversity schemes
2005
This contribution presents a joint linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) equalizer for full-rate space-time transmit diversity multi-code schemes based on W-CDMA, featuring two and four transmit antennas. Specifically, high-rate, high load systems are targeted, in order to analyze the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) of 3GPP Release 6. We derive an equivalent transmission scheme to equalize the received sufficient statistic in a single stage. To reduce the effects of multipath and multiuser interference, and to provide spatial and frequency diversity at the receiver, an LMMSE equalizer is employed. Computer simulations confirm that the proposed schemes achieve robust performance…
A space-division time-division multiple access scheme for high throughput provisioning in WLANs
2005
Directional antennas may dramatically increase the capacity of a Wireless LAN by allowing several stations to simultaneously communicate. Since deployment of directive/smart antennas on the customer's terminals is awkward (for technological, cost, robustness, and convenience reasons) it is of interest to deploy advanced antenna solutions only at the Access Point. When omnidirectional transmissions are used at the Mobile Stations, the asynchronous nature of the 802.11 MAC handshake structurally limits the possibility to exploit spatial reuse. Significant throughput enhancements can be achieved only at the expense of redesigning (part of) the 802.11 MAC protocol: mainly a form of synchronizat…
On the Provisioning of Mobile Digital Terrestrial TV Services to Vehicles With DVB-T
2012
[EN] Most of the DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting -Terrestrial) networks deployments worldwide have been designed for fixed rooftop antennas and high transmission capacity, not providing good coverage level for vehicular mobile reception. This letter analyzes how to combine different technical solutions, so far studied individually, in order to increase the robustness of the transmission for vehicular reception to provide in-band mobile services. In particular, we consider: receive antenna diversity, hierarchical modulation, and Application Layer Forward Error Correction (AL-FEC). Performance evaluation results have been obtained by means of simulations, laboratory tests, and field measure…
Homology modeling using simulated annealing of restrained molecular dynamics and conformational search calculations with CONGEN: application in predi…
1997
We have developed an automatic approach for homology modeling using restrained molecular dynamics and simulated annealing procedures, together with conformational search algorithms available in the molecular mechanics program CONGEN (Bruccoleri RE, Karplus M, 1987, Biopolymers 26:137-168). The accuracy of the method is validated by "predicting" structures of two homeodomain proteins with known three-dimensional structures, and then applied to predict the three-dimensional structure of the homeodomain of the murine Msx-1 transcription factor. Regions of the unknown protein structure that are highly homologous to the known template structure are constrained by "homology distance constraints,"…
Molecular characterization of the zerknüllt region of the Antennapedia complex of D. subobscura.
1995
We have characterized at the molecular level the zerknullt (zen) region of the Drosophila subobscura Antennapedia complex. The sequence comparison between D. subobscura and D. melanogaster shows an irregular distribution of the conserved and diverged regions, with the homeobox and a putative activating domain completely conserved. Comparisons of the promoter sequence and pattern of expression of the gene during development suggest that the regulation of zen has been conserved during evolution. The conservation of zen expression in a subpopulation of the polar cells indicates the existence of an important role in such cells. We describe a transitory segmented pattern of expression of zen in …
