The influence of severity of fading on the statistical properties of the capacity of Nakagami-m channels with MRC and EGC

2010

In this article, we have studied the statistical properties of the capacity of Nakagami-m channels when spatial diversity combining, such as maximal ratio combining (MRC) and equal gain combining (EGC), is employed at the receiver. The presented results provide insight into the statistical properties of the channel capacity under a wide range of fading conditions in wireless links using L-branch diversity combining techniques. We have derived closed-form analytical expressions for the probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function (CDF), level-crossing rate (LCR), and average duration of fades (ADF) of the channel capacity. The statistical properties of the capacity ar…

High gain/bandwidth off-chip antenna loaded with metamaterial unit-cell impedance matching circuit for sub-terahertz near-field electronic systems

2022

An innovative of-chip antenna (OCA) is presented that exhibits high gain and efciency performance at the terahertz (THz) band and has a wide operational bandwidth. The proposed OCA is implemented on stacked silicon layers and consists of an open circuit meandering line. It is shown that by loading the antenna with an array of subwavelength circular dielectric slots and terminating it with a metamaterial unit cell, its impedance bandwidth is enhanced by a factor of two and its gain on average by about 4 dB. Unlike conventional antennas, where the energy is dissipated in a resistive load, the technique proposed here signifcantly reduces losses. The antenna is excited from underneath the anten…

Wavelet-like efficient analysis of two-dimensional arbitrarily shaped radomes using a surface formulation

2007

[1] Radomes are usually made of lossy dielectric materials, and their accurate analysis is often cumbersome because of their typical large electrical size and geometrical complexity. In real reflector antenna structures, there are always complex interactions between the radome, the reflector surfaces and the directional feeds, which are typically neglected for the sake of simplicity. In this paper we will consider all such interactions in a very accurate way, thus requiring a high number of unknowns for the numerical solution of the problem. To overcome such drawback, an integral equation formulation based on the Equivalence Principle in combination with the wavelet transform has been emplo…

Currents reconstruction by means of a new 2D extrapolation matrix

2007

The equivalent currents reconstructed on the surface of an antenna from its far field measurements have a limited resolution. This is because just the visible part of the spectrum, i.e. the inner part of the circle of radius k (the wavenumber), can be obtained with this technique. The zero padding technique is used for improving the precision; however this technique does not improve the resolution and additional methods must be applied. One of the most used is the Gerchberg-Papoulis algorithm. This technique obtains the non visible spectrum from just the visible region and the maximum size of the antenna. The main disadvantage of this algorithm is that, since it is iterative, it takes a lon…

Dependence of Terahertz Emission and Detection in Photoconductive Antennas on Laser Parameters

In this study, we employ a standard Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) setup based on two photoconductive antennas (PCAs) for THz radiation generation and detection. The characterization of the emission and detection performance as a function of the input pulse wavelength and bandwidth is performed.

Design & Optimization of Large Cylindrical Radomes with Subcell and Non-Orthogonal FDTD Meshes Combined with Genetic Algorithms

2021

The word radome is a contraction of radar and dome. The function of radomes is to protect antennas from atmospheric agents. Radomes are closed structures that protect the antennas from environmental factors such as wind, rain, ice, sand, and ultraviolet rays, among others. The radomes are passive structures that introduce return losses, and whose proper design would relax the requirement of complex front-end elements such as amplifiers. The radome consists mostly in a thin dielectric curved shape cover and sometimes needs to be tuned using metal inserts to cancel the capacitive performance of the dielectric. Radomes are in the near field region of the antennas and a full wave analysis of th…

Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy setup based on photoconductive antennas

2016

Despite the technical difficulties in developing efficient and compact sources and detectors for Terahertz (THz) radiation, this region of the electromagnetic spectrum is attracting an ever-increasing interest, due to its peculiar and high-potential applications in several fields, such as wideband communications, medicine, biology, non-destructive testing, security and defense. Within such contexts, the most widespread approach aiming to deal with THz pulses is based on the THz Time-Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system. In this work, we present our experimental results obtained by means of a THz-TDS set-up based on photoconductive antennas for both the generation and detection stage. It is …

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy based on photoconductive antennas

2016

In this work, we present our first experimental results obtained by means of a THz-TDS setup based on photoconductive antennas (PCAs). The main elements of the setup are: i) a mode-locked Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser (Mai-Tai SP - Spectra Physics), providing optical pulses at 800±20 nm with a duration < 50 fs and repetition rate of 84 MHz; ii) two photoconductive antennas, made in LT-GaAs (Low-Grown Temperature Gallium Arsenide), operating as THz emitter and detector; iii) an optical delay line.

An Improved Receiver Architecture for Cyclic-Prefixed OFDM

2009

A novel Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing receiver architecture to be employed with standard (e.g. Wireless LAN) transmitters is proposed. It features enhanced error-rate performance with flexible computational complexity and robustness to imperfect channel estimation. It is based on exploitation of the redundancy available in the cyclic prefix after cancellation of interference from the previous block. In order to show the effectiveness of our proposal, a number of comparisons to the standard per-subcarrier receiver and a previously existing method are reported.

Ultrafast excitation dynamics of low energy pigments in reconstituted peripheral light-harvesting complexes of photosystem I

2000

AbstractUltrafast dynamics of a reconstituted Lhca4 subunit from the peripheral LHCI-730 antenna of photosystem I of higher plants were probed by femtosecond absorption spectroscopy at 77 K. Intramonomeric energy transfer from chlorophyll (Chl) b to Chl a and energy equilibration between Chl a molecules observed on the subpicosecond time scale are largely similar to subpicosecond energy equilibration processes within LHCII monomers. However, a 5 ps equilibration process in Lhca4 involves unique low energy Chls in LHCI absorbing at 705 nm. These pigments localize the excitation both in the Lhca4 subunit and in LHCI-730 heterodimers. An additional 30–50 ps equilibration process involving red …
