A sense of belonging: A meta-ethnography of the experience of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease receiving care through telemedicine.

2019

To synthesize the qualitative research in the literature addressing how patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease experience care received by telemedicine.Meta-ethnography.Twelve studies, published from 2013 - 2018, were identified by a search of relevant systematic databases in June 2017, including updated searches performed in June 2018.The studies were reviewed and critically appraised independently by three researchers. The review followed the seven steps of meta-ethnography developed by Noblit and Hare, including a line-of-argument synthesis. The synthesis revealed three second-order constructs: presence, transparency, and ambivalence. Using a line-of-argument synthesis, a mod…

Prenatal testosterone of progenitors could be involved in the etiology of both anorexia nervosa and autism spectrum disorders of their offspring

2014

Objectives High intrauterine testosterone (T) levels seem to play a role in the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), but their role in anorexia nervosa (AN) is controversial. Parents with masculinized 2D:4D ratios, a marker of the organizational effects of T, may have other relevant biological characteristics, in particular exposing their offspring to high T levels in the prenatal environment. This would increase the likelihood of their offspring developing these disorders. Methods The present study examined whether parents of offspring with AN (n=34; mean age= 51) and ASD (n=36; mean age=45) differ from control parents (n=40; mean age=43) in 2D:4D ratio, as well as by salivary …

The short die young: the interrelationship between stature and longevity-evidence from skeletal remains.

2005

It has long been observed that tall people display longer life spans. The current data were employed to verify this association within the bioarchaeological context. To this end, stature and its association with age-at-death were analyzed in a pooled sample of 2,923 skeletons. Height was estimated from proxy indicators based on the maximum length of the humerus, radius, femur, and tibia. Stature estimation followed the procedure outlined by Pearson ([1899] Philos. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. [A] 192:169-244), incorporating minor modifications by Rosing ([ 1988] Handbuch der vergleichenden Biologie des Menschen; Stuttgart: Gustave Fischer, p 586-600). Individual age estimates were classified into t…

2015

International audience; Jean Bollack’s philologische Wissenschaft aims to reach the “good lesson” of a text and to get the “original intent” of its author, in the true sense of these expressions. It is based on three main elements: the identification of biases that would lead to an incorrect interpretation; the syntactic analysis of the text and the discussion of the points of view of other scholars (i.e. a dialectical criticism). Bollack – despite his accuracy – does not question his own assumptions: 1) that the sense of a text is in the manuscripts we possess (or – in any case – it is recoverable through them); 2) the idea that the great texts are more insightful than others; and 3) the n…

Silmitön ja väkivaltainen : erään mielisairaalapotilaan ura 1900-luvulla

2018

Kysymyksiin vastaamiseen tarvitaan kontekstin, suomalaisen psykiatrian, tuntemista. Katrin yhteenlaskettu hoitoaika piirimielisairaalassa kesti yli 40 vuotta, ja tuo ajanjakso sisältää miltei kaikki 1900-luvulla käytetyt hoitomuodot. Sairauskertomuksen lääketieteelli…

Linguistic landscapes of a minoritized regional majority: Language ideologies among Hungarians in South-West Slovakia

2016

[Introduction] This article is an investigation of the linguistic situation in South-West Slovakia and its interpretation by local inhabitants through the notion of linguistic landscape (LL hereafter), here understood broadly as texts displayed in visual space.1 This study has two broad aims. Firstly, the general distribution of the languages in the LL of two historically Hungarian villages is established. This distributional picture is compared to (inter)national and local conceptions about the visual use of different languages in South-West Slovakia. Secondly, using an ethnographic approach and making use of the data gathered during one month fieldwork, a set of individual signs and sign …

"Mutta niille ei voi mitään, joilla on aivoissa vika" : mielisairauden kansanomaiset tulkinnat 1900-luvun alkuvuosikymmenten modernisoituvassa Suomes…

2015

Artikkelissa tarkastellaan mielisairauden kansanomaisia tulkintoja 1900-luvun ensimmäisinä vuosikymmeninä, jolloin mielisairaita ja muita marginaaliryhmiä koskeva yhteiskunnallinen keskustelu kävi vilkkaana. Mielisairaat alkoivat degeneraatioteorioiden myötä näyttäytyä modernisoituvan yhteiskunnan ei- toivottuina toisina, joiden henkinen ja fyysinen rappio uskottiin perinnölliseksi. Mielisairaaloiden lukumäärää lisättiin, mutta merkittävä osa mielisairaiksi katsotuista eli yhä laitosten ulkopuolella, esimerkiksi elätteellä maaseudun yksityisissä perheissä. Artikkelissa selvitetään, miten mielisairaisiin suhtaudutaan aikakauden maallikkokerronnassa ja millaisia käsityksiä esitetään mielisair…

Who Dares to Wear Trousers? Adoption of a New Fashion by Finnish Women 1920–1980

2021

Trousers have traditionally been men’s clothing that women have not been allowed to wear. In this article, I study the history of women’s wearing of trousers in the twentieth-century Finnish context by analysing women’s own memories and experiences of the trouser trend. My research material consists of written reminiscences, which I use, first, to reconstruct the social and cultural factors that framed women’s choices. Second, I approach their personal preferences and choices by analysing their narrative identities in the context of dress. My analysis shows that the cultural norms, conventions and expectations about a proper dress were crucial for adopting a new fashion trend. The most impo…
