Predictability of intraocular lens power calculation after small-incision lenticule extraction for myopia
2019
PURPOSE To evaluate and compare the predictability of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation after small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for myopia and myopic astigmatism. SETTING Department of Ophthalmology, Philipps University of Marburg, Marburg, Germany. DESIGN Retrospective comparative case series. METHODS Preoperative evaluation included optical biometry using IOLMaster 500 and corneal tomography using Pentacam HR. The corneal tomography measurements were repeated at 3 months postoperatively. The change of spherical equivalent due to SMILE was calculated by the manifest refraction at corneal plane (SMILE-Dif). A theoretical model, involving the virtual implantation of the same…
Residual astigmatism produced by toric intraocular lens rotation.
2010
Purpose To analyze changes in the eye’s refractive properties when a toric intraocular lens (IOL) rotates. Setting Fundacion Oftalmologica del Mediterraneo, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods The matrix definition of astigmatism was used in this theoretical study and compared with another vector representation. Two methods were compared: (1) The cylinder, C, resulting from the addition of 2 cylinders C1 and C2 whose axes form an angle a, is obtained by the addition of 2 vectors of values C1 and C2 forming an angle 2a; (2) the power matrix, F, of a thin astigmatic dioptric system that decomposes naturally into 3 orthogonal components: the purely spherical part Fnes, the orth…
Correlation between optics quality of multifocal intraocular lenses and visual acuity
2009
Purpose To study the relationship between the optics quality of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) and distance-corrected near, intermediate, and distance visual acuity to determine the degree to which optics quality must change to produce a significant difference in visual acuity. Setting Fundacion Oftalmologica del Mediterraneo, Valencia, Spain. Methods Monocular distance-corrected visual acuity (decimal and logMAR) was measured at 4 m, 70 cm, and 30 cm under photopic and mesopic conditions in eyes with 1 of 3 multifocal IOL models. Visual acuity versus the “average modulation” of the IOL was assessed. Results The pupil diameter and patient age were similar between the 3 IOL groups (20 …
Ahmed valve, suture-less implantation: A new approach to an easier technique.
2013
Purpose Tissue adhesives have been used in ophthalmology instead of sutures to minimize the operating time. This case series investigated the effectiveness and safety of use of cyanoacrylate in Ahmed valve implantation through pars plana for refractory glaucoma. Patients and methods Seventeen eyes of 17 patients with refractory glaucoma underwent Ahmed valve scleral suture-less implantation through pars plana with a cyanoacrylate suture of the plate. Refractory glaucoma was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) ≥ 21 mm Hg with antiglaucoma eye drops, good adherence to treatment, and no previous glaucoma surgery. IOP control and development of complications were evaluated during the follow-u…
Intravitreal pegaptanib sodium for refractory pseudophakic macular oedema.
2008
Evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal pegaptanib sodium (Macugen®) in refractory pseudophakic cystoid macular oedema (CME). Prospective, nonrandomized, interventional case series. Four eyes of four patients with refractory pseudophakic CME to pars plana vitrectomy and intravitreal bevacizumab and triamcinolone, were treated with pegaptanib sodium, with a mean follow up of 4 months. Pre- and postinfection examinations included assessment of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study chart (ETDRS), fluorescein angiography (FA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Visual acuity increased in all patients after intravitreal pegaptanib sodium. OCT…

The eye in thyroid autoimmunity – Autoimmunité et œil lors de la maladie de Basedow
2014
Thyroid eye disease or thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) is the commonest cause of orbital disease with an inflammatory component. With a basic knowledge of both orbital anatomy and the pathogenesis of TAO, it is easy to understand how its typical constellation of features originates. These features can be considered as primary or secondary. Primary features are those due directly to the disease process affecting a tissue e.g. restrictive myopathy. Secondary features occur due to the interaction of the affected tissue and the anatomical configuration of the tissues e.g. corneal ulceration or optic neuropathy, and are less likely to be florid at presentation. TAO is characterized by an im…
The Prevalence of Glaucoma in Young People.
2017
BACKGROUND Earlier information on the prevalence of glaucoma among children in Germany was based solely on estimates. Reported values for congenital glaucoma range from 1 in 10 000 to 1 in 68 000 depending on ethnic origin. The estimate for juvenile glaucoma is 1 in 44 000. METHODS The Gutenberg Health Study is a populationbased, prospective, monocentric cohort study with 15 010 participants aged 35 to 74. To determine the history-based prevalence of childhood glaucoma, participants were asked about the diagnosis of glaucoma, any operations for glaucoma that were performed, regular use of drugs for glaucoma, and the age of onset of glaucoma. The affected individuals were classified in four …
Posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses to improve visual outcomes in keratoconus patients
2016
The aim of this review is to summarize the results of using posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) to restore quality of vision in keratoconus patients. These pIOLs can correct the refractive errors associated with keratoconus and can also be combined with other surgical techniques to improve the results.
Modulation transfer function: Rigid versus foldable phakic intraocular lenses
2008
Purpose To study in a standard eye model the changes in modulation transfer function (MTF) of a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) when a phakic IOL (pIOL) is placed in the anterior chamber, compare the MTFs of the rigid Artisan pIOL and foldable Artiflex pIOL, and evaluate the temporal evolution of the MTF of the foldable pIOL after the mechanical stress the pIOL undergoes when injected. Setting Fundacion Oftalmologica del Mediterraneo, Valencia, Spain. Methods The MTF values of the IOLs were calculated from the cross-line spread function recorded with the Opal Vector System. The measurements were taken using an eye model following the British and EN-ISO standards with 2.0 mm, 3.0 mm, 4.0 mm…
