Successful closure of the root apex in non-vital permanent incisors with wide open apices using single calcium hydroxide (caoh) dressing: report of 2…
2010
Endodontic management of immature non vital permanent teeth in young pediatric patients is a great challenge to dentists. The walls of the root canals are frequently divergent and open apexes make debridement and obturation difficult. Thus closure of root apex is very essential for success of the endodontic treatment. Although different materials are used for the apexification procedure, calcium hydroxide is the material of choice for apical barrier formation and healing. There are different opinions regarding frequency of CaOH dressing change to induce complete closure of the apex. Literature suggests that dressing should be changed frequently. Therefore the aim of the present article is t…
Adhesive papillae ofAscidia malacaswimming larvae: investigations on their sensory function
1999
Summary Swimming larvae of Ascidia malaca bear, in the anterior region of cephalenteron, three adhesive papillae through which they can attach to a substratum prior to metamorphosis. The ultrastructural investigations described in the present work have mainly revealed the presence of three cell types constituting the papillae: (a) collocytes, (b) axial columnar cells, (c) sensory cells. Collocytes, whose ultrastructure is typical of secretory cells, form the adhesive secretion. The ultrastructural observations of the axial columnar cells are insufficient to explain their function. Probably this cell type plays a supporting role though some sensory function cannot be excluded due to the pres…
Comparative cytotoxicity evaluation of eight root canal sealers
2017
Background The aim of the present study is to evaluate and compare the cytotoxic effects of eight root canal sealers (BioRoot RCS, TotalFill BC Sealer, MTA Fillapex, Sealapex, AH Plus, EasySeal, Pulp Canal Sealer, N2) on immortalized human gingival fibroblasts over a period of 24, 48 and 72 hours. Material and Methods Immortalized human gingival fibroblast-1 HGF-1 (ATCC CRL-2014) were incubated. Root canal sealers were then placed into sterile, cylindrical Teflon moulds. The extraction was made eluting the sealers in cell culture medium. Cells (1 × 104) were seeded in each well of a 96-well plate and incubated for 24 h at 37°C. Cultures were then exposed to 100 μL of the extracts medium. Th…
Effects of different intra canal medicaments on the push out bond strength of endodontic sealers
2016
BACKGROUND One of the essential properties of the root canal sealers is the adhesion to root canal dentin and their higher bond strength decreases the microleakage. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of Different Intracanal medicaments on the push out bond strength of AH26 and MTA Fillapex sealers. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 104 one-rooted extracted human teeth were divided into 4 (n=26) experimental groups. After the cleaning and shaping, the root canals were filled with Ca(OH)2, triantibiotic paste (TAP), Metapex or 2% chlorhexidine gel for two weeks. Then, intracanal medicaments were rinsed away and the samples in the sub-groups were obturated with gutta-percha a…
Colonization pattern of primary tomato roots by Pseudomonas fluorescens A6RI characterized by dilution plating, flow cytometry, fluorescence, confoca…
2004
Early colonization of primary tomato roots, grown in vitro, by Pseudomonas fluorescens A6RI, introduced by seed bacterization, was monitored for 7 days in three different root zones (zone A, apex+elongation+young hairy zone; zone B, hairy zone; zone C, old hairy zone+collar). Bacterial quantification was assessed by enumeration of (i) colony forming units (cfu) after dilution plating and of (ii) total bacterial cells by flow cytometry. Bacterial distribution and organization in the root zones were analyzed by fluorescence, confocal and scanning electron microscopy. For all sampling dates and zones, the densities of total bacterial cells were significantly higher than those of the cfu. The k…
Mandibular incisive canal-related prevalence, morphometric parameters, and implant placement implications : a multicenter study of 847 CBCT scans
2020
Background This study evaluated the epidemiological and morphological features of the mandibular incisive canal (MIC) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a significant sample of subjects in Brazil. Material and Methods This retrospective, multicenter study assessed 847 CBCT scans performed at four oral imaging centers. The sample comprised CBCT images acquired from dentate individuals who presented at least from tooth 35 to tooth 45 in the anterior mandible region. Data regarding patient sex and age, and MIC linear measurements (length and diameter in mm), anatomical distances (to the alveolar, buccal and lingual cortexes, inferior border of the mandible, and adjacent teeth apexes…
Cone-beam computed tomography analysis of root and canal morphology of mandibular premolars in a Spanish population
2014
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the clinical anatomy of lower premolar roots in a Spanish population by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), correlating findings with patient gender and tooth type. Materials and Methods: Using 70 CBCT images, we evaluated 126 healthy, untreated, well-developed lower premolars. The number and morphology of roots and root canals, and the foramina number were assessed. Results for gender and tooth type were compared using the chi-squared and ANOVA tests. Results: The average length of teeth and roots was significantly higher in men (p=0.00). All 126 premolars had a single root. One canal was found in 83.3% of the premolars, with no gender or to…
Biological and physico-chemical properties of new root canal sealers
2018
Background The purpose of the present study was to compare the biological and the physico-chemical properties of bioceramic-based root canal sealers, calcium hydroxide-based, MTA-based and epoxy resin-based root canal sealers. Material and methods Two bioceramic-based sealers, one calcium hydroxide-based sealer, one MTA-based sealer and two epoxy resin-based sealers were tested. Results EasySeal and MTA Fillapex showed severe citotoxic activity, AH Plus and SealapexTM moderate cytotoxicity, BioRoot™ RCS and TotalFill BC Sealer were both cytocompatible. Except for TotalFill BC Sealer, all root canal sealers caused inhibition zones when tested with E. faecalis. The highest inhibition zone was…
Cyclophosphamide-Induced Morphological Changes in Dental Root Development of ICR Mice.
2015
Background Survivors of childhood cancer are at risk of late dental development. Cyclophosphamide is one of the most commonly used chemotherapeutic agents against cancer in children. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cyclophosphamide on root formation in the molars of growing mice and to assess the morphological changes in these roots using three-dimensional structural images. Methods We treated 16 12-day-old ICR mice with cyclophosphamide (100 mg/kg, i.p.) and 16 control mice with saline. At 16, 20, 24, and 27 days of age, the mandibular left first molars were scanned using soft micro-computed tomography. After scanning, the structural indices were calculated using a …
