Treatment of apicomarginal defect with periapical surgery: A case report

An apicomarginal defect can be explained as a total loss of buccal alveolus extending from the original crestal bone to the apex of the tooth. This study presents a case of an apicomarginal defect in a first left molar subjected to periapical surgery with vestibular cortex block replacement and A-PRF + membrane coating approximately one year ago. One-year clinical follow-up was performed, with no evidence of recurrence. This case report discusses periapical surgical treatment and the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to the management of teeth with apicomarginal defects. An in vivo comparative study of two apex locators

Two different electronic apex locators were used before extraction to determine working length in 116 root canals belonging to 34 molars. The results were then compared with postextraction working length measurements. The determinations were made before and after eliminating the canal contents and drying the interior. The results showed that 84.8% and 79.3% of the Odometer, and 89.6% and 88.7% of the Endocater readings for dry and nondry canals, respectively, occurred within the two 0.5-mm intervals closest to the apical constriction.

Background The objective of this study was to determine the effect of antibiotic prophylaxis in preventing postoperative infections after extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. Material and Methods A Parallel-group, randomized, blind, placebo-controlled trial was performed. 154 patients were randomly allocated to 2 groups; experimental (n=77) receiving 2g amoxicillin 1 hour prior to surgery and control (n=77) receiving placebo. Primary outcome was postoperative infections and secondary outcome was the need for rescue analgesia. Objectives: To evaluate radiographically the quality of root canal fillings and compare manual and rotary preparation performed on extracted teeth by undergraduate dental students. Study Design: A total of 561 premolars and molars extracted teeth were prepared using nickel-titanium rotary files or manual instrumentation and filled with gutta-percha using a cold lateral condensation technique, by 4th grade undergraduate students. SLC5A8 is a member of the sodium/glucose cotransporter family. It has been proposed that SLC5A8 might act as an apical iodide transporter in the thyroid follicular cells or as a transporter of short chain monocarboxylates. We have directly addressed the functional role of SLC5A8 in vivo by generation of SLC5A8 mutant mice. We found that SLC5A8 is responsible for the re-absorption of lactate at the apical membrane of the kidney proximal tubules and of serous salivary gland ducts. In addition, SLC5A8 mediated the uptake of lactate into colonocytes under physiological conditions. The novel adamantane derivative APICA (N-(adamantan-1-yl)-1-pentyl-1H-indole-3-carboxamide) was recently identified as a cannabinomimetic indole of abuse. Medically unattended oral abscesses may spread to their surrounding area or even throught the entire body. Depending on the individual`s constitution, such processes may lead to a life-threatening situation or death. (Pre)historic case studies deliver more information about distribution and adverse effects of oral infections and the risk of mortality. In this particular case report an iron aged skeleton of a 35- to 45-year-old woman from Eulau (Naumburg/ Saale, Germany) shows multiple periapical lesions and their effects on the viscerocranium. Furthermore, alterations on the long bones can be associated with chronic inflammation processes.
OCTN2-Mediated Carnitine Uptake in a Newly Discovered Human Proximal Tubule Cell Line (Caki-1)

The proximal tubular reabsorption of carnitine in the human kidney is significant because more than 95% of the carnitine filtered in the kidney is reabsorbed by the proximal tubules therefore maintaining the homeostatic balance of carnitine in the body. Objectives of this study include the characterization of OCTN2 function in the Caki-1 cell line and the potential interactions of carnitine uptake with renally secreted drugs, including drugs of quaternary ammonium structure.
