Follicle Cells of Styela plicata Eggs (Ascidiacea)

2001

Styela plicata eggs are surrounded by large follicle cells that at LM appear as highly vacuolated and columnar in shape; at the apical end of each cell lies a very large and clear vacuole, half of which extends inward. Electron microscope observations show a Single layer of largely spaced box-like follicle cells; the close cell-cell contact at their base is realized by interdigitations. The cell surface shows a peculiar structure, more developed in the latero-basal regions, consisting of a complex of membrane extensions, i.e. microvilli, filopodia and lamellipodia. Filopodia irradiate in all directions towards the adjacent cells and the outermost vitelline coat, thus creating a complex netw…

The Follicle Cells of Styela Plicata (Ascidiacea, Tunicata): A Sem Study

2000

The morphological aspect of the follicle cells of Styela plicata eggs is described by means of scanning electron microscope investigations. The follicular layer is made of spaced, cylindrical box-like cells which are arranged hexagonally. They adhere to the egg through a complex network of membrane extensions making an overall thin layer on the vitelline coat. The walls of the follicle cells are plentifully provided with microvilli, filopodia and lamellipodia, which allow a connection among the cells. At their apical end lies a large vacuole containing a granule, probably involved in secretion. At insemination the majority of spermatozoa is distributed on the apical membrane of the follicle…

Prevalence of endodontic infection in patients with Crohn ́s disease and ulcerative colitis

2021

[Background] Previous studies have linked apical periodontitis (AP) to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of AP and root canal treatment (RCT) in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn ́s disease (CD).

Comparison of the shaping characteristics of Neolix and Protaper Universal systems in preparation of severely-curved simulated canals

2017

Background The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the shaping characteristics of two types of nickel-titanium endodontic file systems with regard to the following parameters: Canal straightening, Canal deviation and Instrumentation time. Material and Methods Fifty severely curved canals simulated in resin blocks were prepared to an apical size 25 using Protaper Universal orNeolix systems (n=25 canals/group). The angle of canal curvature was determined before and after instrumentation. Pre- and post-operative images were superimposed to determine any canal deviation. The instrumentation time was also recorded. The data were statistically analyzed by using independent sample t-test and…

Survey based assessment of diagnosis through periapical radiograph and CBCT and treatment of root resorption with Brazilian and American dentists and…

2020

Background This study assesses and compares the knowledge level of endodontists (ENDs) and general dental practitioners (GPs) from Brazil and United States of America (USA) in the diagnosis and treatment of internal and external inflammatory root resorptions through periapical radiographic (PA) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examinations. Material and Methods A cross-sectional online questionnaire-based survey was presented to the volunteers containing questions regarding personal and professional profile, as well as three clinical cases of internal and external inflammatory root resorption. A series of multiple-choice questions about the diagnosis and treatment options were surve…

Micelles as containers for self-assembled nanodevices: a fluorescent sensor for lipophilicity

2008

Potentiometric titrations, fluorescence versus pH titrations, dynamic light scattering and fluorescence polarization anisotropy studies demonstrate that inside the nanodimensioned Triton X-100 micelles, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, PCOO-, forms an apical complex with the Zn2+ cation encircled by a lipophilic cyclen ligand and hugely increasing its fluorescence. The ability of the Zn2+-cyclen-PCOO- complex plus its micellar container to act as a fluorescent sensor to evaluate the lipophilicity of molecular species is demonstrated on the fatty acid series CH 3(CH2)xCOOH (x=0-16). At pH 7.4 a decrease in fluorescence is observed on the addition of fatty acids that is directly related to their chai…

In vitro propagation ofSalix tarraconensis Pau ex Font Quer, an endemic and threatened plant

1996

Salix tarraconensis Pau ex Font Quer, an endemic willow species from northeast Spain, was micropropagated with nodal segments. Shoot multiplication was obtained with different cytokinins, either on Murashige and Skoog medium or woody plant medium. Best results for shoot formation were obtained on Murashige and Skoog medium containing 4.9 μM of 6-γ-γ-dimethylallylaminopurine. Shoots showed strong apical dominance, and some cultures displayed apical necrosis. Benzyladenine gave the worst results; shoots displayed very slow growth, deformed leaves, and hyperhydrity. Good rooting of shoots was obtained with different auxins or without plant growth regulators on woody plant medium. The best resu…

Internodal elongation in the grapevine (<em>Vitis vinifera</em> L.) : leaf influences and role of the shoot apex

1996

<p style="text-align: justify;">The respective influences of the leaves and shoot apex on stimulation of internodal elongation were studied in the grapevine. Various defoliation or decapitation treatments were applied to the shoot of rooted hardwood cuttings grown in a controlled environment chamber.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Concerning the foliar influences, the role of three sorts of leaves, in relation to their nodal position relative to the internode was analysed ; its own leaves, the leaves located below it and the young leaves neoformed above. The effects produced by excision of these different leaves show that the two adjacent leaves (below and above) of th…

Racial disparity and prognosis in patients with mouth and oropharynx cancer in Brazil.

2022

Oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Populations in situations of social vulnerability tend to have higher incidences of cancer, a higher proportion of late diagnosis, greater difficulties in accessing health services, and, consequently, worse prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between race/skin color and OPC prognosis in Brazil. This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study using OPC data from the National Cancer Institute between the years 2000 and 2019. The selected variables were: gender, race/skin color, age, education, smoking and alcohol consumption, stage of the disease and disease status at …
