Study design One hundred two patients (31 men and 71 women) with a mean age of 40.2 years underwent periapical surgery. Age, gender, and oral hygiene and cigarette smoking before and during the postoperative course were noted. The authors evaluated periodontal parameters following apical surgery using a new marginal sulcular incision. In 65 cases, surgical access was achieved by means of a sulcular incision technique without the involvement of the adjacent periodontia and the interproximal papillae and in 33 cases by means of a submarginal trapezoidal technique.
