Can we ascertain that an archeological site contains intentional stellar alignments?

2021

We study the different parameters that support the presence of intentional stellar alignments on an archaeological site. We develop a rigorous criterion to quantify the probability of fortuitous orientation on a starrise or a starset. We show that the magnitude of the considered stars and the precision of the angular measurements are the two preponderant parameters. Our study aims at establishing the basis of reliable methods for archaeoastronomy.

2011

Among a set of objects accidentally discovered in 2003 at Chalonnes- sur-Loire (Maine-et-Loire, France), a Middle Bronze Age hoard has been identified. The other objects, including a triangular side scraper, are dated from the Late Bronze Age and will be studied later. These eleven Middle Bronze Age objects (called "the Belvédère set" in this paper) are two frag- ments of chisels, a fragment of the handle of another flanged tool, a fragment of the handle of a flanged axe belonging to an eastern type (Porcieu-Amblagneu or Langquaid or some variants), two fluted flanged axes with a rare lateral pattern, two simple undecorated bracelets, and three pieces of bracelets of the Drône type. They…

Colonial, post-colonial, neo-colonial Mediterranean: historical, archaeological and iconographical sources for a micro-history of an uncomfortable th…

2020

Even in its most neutral meanings, the term “colonial” leads to questioning the cultural and ideological purpose of its use. This also concerns its derivatives, post-colonial and neo-colonial, whose prefixes are not to be interpreted in a merely chronological sense. This paper investigates the remote origins of a mental attitude that has resulted both in a “colonial” reading of some phenomena and in a post-colonial new interpretation. The aim is to highlight the common cultural bases of these two very different conceptions (in theory opposite and non-superimposable). Also, the interpretations which are apparently far from imperialism are not totally immune from the danger of a form of racis…

1400 years of man-environment interactions and soil evolution in the Saint-Mont mountain (Remiremont, Vosges)

2021

International audience; The SolHoM(a) project aims at determining the degree of landscape anthropisation in the Fossard massif (Remiremont, Vosges, France) by estimating the impact of past human occupations on current soils. Nowadays, a forest covers this relatively inhospitable mountain (hard climate, steep slopes, acid soils ...), but some remains suggest human presence for at least 1400 years. The Saint-Mont is a variscan orogenic granitic summit (height 672m) with valuable preserved archaeological relics, located south of the Fossard. At the top was founded the monasterium Habendum (from the 7th century to the French Revolution), which potentially comes after a late-antic castrum.Further…

Decoration composition of Iberian Iron Age ivory artifacts identified by no-destructive chemical analyses

2019

In this work, five unique Iberian Iron Age handles have been studied. The use of portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) and Fourier transform near–infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy no-destructive techniques has allowed us to identify two raw materials (amber and tin) used to decorate the ivory handles.Due to the finesse of their inlaid decoration and the value and exoticismof thematerial employed for their manufacture, these ivory objects are really exceptional Iberian archaeology findings. Interestingly, it has been possible to determine that tin was used as an adherentmaterial to…
