Mesolithic pit-sites in Champagne (France): First data, key issues

2015

International audience; In less than a decade, more than 30 sites and around 200 deep pits dated to the Mesolithic have been identied in the Champagne-Ardenne region (north-eastern France). This paper describes the main characteristics of these features and provides some clues for their interpretation. This unexpected but apparently common type of site clearly implies a more marked territoriality and a greater social complexity than generally proposed for the period in continental northern France.

Fontaines (Saône-et-Loire). Place de l’Église [notice archéologique]

2019

2018

Abstract Cultural foundations, beliefs and associated ritual practices delimit the relation to and the representation and lived experience of the body in specific ways. Language is the means through which the cultural specificity of both individual and shared mental content can be explored and worked with in therapy. This article presents beliefs about the body in a patient’s religion of origin and takes up the question of the role of the cultural dimension in psychosomatic phenomena. A case report gives indications of a novel therapeutic approach to this theme and highlights the intrinsic connection between cultural belonging and embodiment. Both the two-year long clinical intervention and…

CoproID predicts the source of coprolites and paleofeces using microbiome composition and host DNA content

2020

Shotgun metagenomics applied to archaeological feces (paleofeces) can bring new insights into the composition and functions of human and animal gut microbiota from the past. However, paleofeces often undergo physical distortions in archaeological sediments, making their source species difficult to identify on the basis of fecal morphology or microscopic features alone. Here we present a reproducible and scalable pipeline using both host and microbial DNA to infer the host source of fecal material. We apply this pipeline to newly sequenced archaeological specimens and show that we are able to distinguish morphologically similar human and canine paleofeces, as well as non-fecal sediments, fro…

2015

The site of Cagny on the "Plaine de Caen" was excavated from February to July 2008 and was the first site in Lower Normandy to reap the benefits of large sacle mechanical earth moving, the entire site being revealed over 13.6 acres. Beyond the two enclosures identified during a prior archaeological evaluation, this strategy, prescribed by the Ministry of Culture and Communication's archeological service in Lower-Normandy, resulted in the detection of unexpected remains and occupations. Indeed, we were able to study a settlement dating back to the Middle Neolithic II and a large necropolis with monuments dating to the Early to Middle Bronze Ages. For the Iron Age, features revealing domestic…

Himera: pratiche cultuali nell’abitato

2014

The excavations of the University of Palermo in ancient Himera (northern Sicily) discovered a relatively large part of the ancient Greek town, which was organized according to a regular grid-plan dated to the first half of 6th century BC (as the latest stratigraphic trials have shown), while in the second quarter of the 5th century and later, till the destruction of the city in 409, several modifications altered the house-blocks and their inner organization. The paper treats the evidences for domestic cultic activities in this latter phase of the settlement, and at the same time examines some contexts that are “intermediate” between the “oikic” and the communal spheres. Albeit the evidence …

Senās DNS analīžu pielietojums Latvijas teritorijas dzelzs laikmeta apbedījumu raksturojumā

2022
